all the glue eating game journos gave it 10/10s but when i look at the opinions of regular ppl with taste im seeing a lot of negative reviews. over-reliance on slow walk/climb parts, more than half the game is cutscenes, nonstop marvel tier dialogue, game tells you how to solve all puzzles/boss encounters in the first 5 seconds, etc.

how valid is all this, or is this just people on the internet trying to be edgy

If you expect it to be like the old god of wars you will be disappointed. There is a lot of dialogue but its a fantastic story with fun gameplay and side quests.

There is some truth to all those complaints but probably not nearly as extreme as they are making out. Still very good even if I prefer the 2018 game by a bit.

All that sounds like the first GOW game, which I loved

Yeah, but it is primarily the required story ones. The harder ones to find hidden stuff don't typically have any hints at all.

The puzzle and sometimes boss encounters thing is a very legit complaint, but everything else, imo, is exaggerrated. From GoW trilogy fanboys mad that more people prefer God of Boi than their games, to people who prefer the first game for how personal it felt (a legit criticism), and from people that don't want it to earn GotY (Elden Ring fanboys).

I will definitely say this, GoW 2018 and GoWR wouldn't be so well loved if the gameplay was shit. Also in both games (especially GoWR) had some of the best hype and story moments I've seen in video games in a long time. It kept surprising me just how good some of the dialogue or story beats were. While I'm not exactly a fan of the way the game ended in GoWR (I prefer they go much deeper into the Norse lore), it was still an amazing experience.

Its not bad but its certanly not a 10/10 game.

Traversing the world is huge pain, the world map isn't very useful, puzzles are numerous and tedious, most items are worthless, enemies are overturned as fuck, especially most bosses and the games pacing is to linear as hell.

as far as the "Marvel-tier" writing goes, I've got to disagree.

like yea, the dialogue feels modern, which I don't really mind, since the series has never really been about using accents and old timey speech, but it's not full of: snark, one-liners, or stuff meant to keep the mood light (even though it has plenty of its own humor).

and I say that as someone who generally likes the MCU.

I second this. Everything else varies player to player. For instance, I've been questing a ton so cutscenes are much further apart for me.

I beat the game last weekend. It was my first God of War game, but I loved it.

does the boy get more annoying in the sequel

Ragnarok is great and an improvement over the previous one in every way.

Characters giving you hints to solve puzzles before you even have a chance to look them over yet in kinda annoying, but that's not a super big deal to me.

I love the hell out of the game, but the NPCs giving puzzle solutions 5 seconds after encountering a puzzle is actually super annoying

Im only about 3 hours in but the only thing I have definitely noticed is the Marvel dialogue. Cant remember if 2018 was like this too but it takes me out of the game a bit.

It has a little more irreverent, "quippy" dialogue than the last one like in Marvel films. It's not a big deal.

A little, but I feel like the extra dialogue you get when you hang around the characters fills in enough details to the point where I could follow the plot well.

If you like the 2018 game I'm not sure what would be disappointing about this one. It's basically the ideal direct sequel. Bigger and better in every way.

The only thing I can see people being disappointed about is that it's still clearly a crossgen game with the PS4 foundation. But then this wouldn't be the same game if it wasn't that.

I've heard nothing but praise for it.

If you go in expecting it to not be like the previous one, then you're an idiot and you should get the negative review.

I'm playing on PS4 and I'm VERY happy it's cross gen. Get the feeling I'm gonna be in trouble from 2023 and beyond but I know the new Yakuza games are all coming to the PS4 through 2024 so I think I'm gonna keep mine going as long as I can

I dunno, using climbing segments to load areas sounds like Classic God of War to me.

I also want to point out that I heard the issue with the game solving puzzles for you within seconds has been patched out. You'll still get hints now but only if you're stuck at it for several minutes.

Yeah I just did a story puzzle that had me stumped like an idiot and they didn't tell me anything for a bit. When they finally did I got upset and flogged myself.
