Like, people always say that it's used to calm the nerves and help you fall asleep some times. Bullshit!

Sure, it calms the nerves, but I would take it to help me fall asleep and it did anything but that. There was a time where I took a xanax at midnight and put on some Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance to wind down for the night.

I beat the entire game that night. I barely moved from my couch. I was hyperfocused on the game, which I was using to "wind down"! It doesn't help you sleep, it's just a downer version of adderall.

I do not understand XANAX.

It's a tranquilizer similar to tricyclic antidepressants, which means it works through essentially creating an artificial neurotransmitter that binds with existing receptors in your body. It's different from SRIs (Selective Reuptake Inhibitors) or MAOIs, (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors) which work in different ways (mainly by interacting with the enzymes that break down neurotransmitters, which effectively floods your brain with the neurotransmitter - usually serotonin - to compensate for low levels of said neurotransmitter).

Psychopharmacology! Whoo!

Also, I'm kind of amazed that the Firefox spell-checker actually recognized the word "psychopharmacology". Especially when it doesn't recognize "blockquote".

I took a xanax once about 10 years ago. I woke up 5 hours later in full panic attack mode. Never again.

It is. There can also be withdrawal symptoms and strong side-effects. It's part of why that sort of drug has mostly been replaced by SRIs for anti-anxiety treatment, at least as a first option.

Which is something else to consider that most people don't realize. If you ask your doctor for anti-anxiety meds, they prescribe something, and it doesn't seem to work, that doesn't mean you should just shrug and give up on the idea entirely. There are lots of different types of anti-anxiety meds, all of which work in different ways, and if one doesn't work for you one of the others might.

So what you should generally do is work with your doctor, have them prescribe something, and if it doesn't work, potentially try something else. You may also need to adjust dosage over time to figure out what's right for your body chemistry. Eventually you may hit on the perfect combination that radically alters your worldview for the better, and dramatically increases quality of life. Which is better than simply giving up and saying "Oh well, I guess this is just my life now."

That sort of treatment should also go hand-in-hand with therapy, though. Because not all depression or anxiety is caused by biochemical reasons. Working through issues can often help just as much (if not more) as treating symptoms medically. But in many cases chemical imbalance is very much the problem, and simply trying to talk through problems isn't going to help unless medication is also part of the equation.

that's because one is a word, and the other is two words that needs a space in the middle

I fucking wish I could get Xanax but literally no doctor will give it to me. They want to try anything but and some of the shit is terrible. But .25mg of Xanax calms me right the fuck down.
