$4.19

the people who think the president can control gas prices are funny to me

mainly because there was a bill voted on that would lower gas prices significantly (and also that he can't directly do anything about it)

can you guess which color all unanimously voted against it

It's not inflation, or lack of supply, or to offset costs. If any of those were the root cause, they wouldn't be pulling in record profits.

Ffs the price per barrel is actually DOWN from where we were pre-Ukraine war. It has been for months. The only reason prices are what they are is because corporate suits at Shell and others realized they could.

Biden has actually INCREASED access to domestic drilling in an attpt to offest the spike, and purportedly its being deliberately underutilized by these corps to help keep their coffers overflowing.

It's all a fucking scam.

$5 exactly yesterday.

Fuck OPEC for keeping the barrels extracted artificially low and fuck U.S. companies for putting stock share prices above investing in more drilling.
We're actually still (globally) at lower demand than before the pandemic. But the supply is way lower than before it, because they massively cut back in 2020 and are slow rolling the "return to normal".

Why get back to normal supply when you can put in less work to produce less supply and use that "shortage" to justify charging twice as much for it?

CAD $8.29/gallon which works out to USD $6.62 with a similar or worse minimum wage to many US states and much worse cost of living.

Crazy how island countries that need to import their oil are paying much less than countries that are loaded with it. This high-octane as well:

Local pushback against domestic drilling for environmental reasons doesn't really help with that either.

People don't want oil pipelines or offshore drilling (for understandable reasons), but those are the sorts of things that would bring prices down as supply increases (and dependence on foreign sources decreases).

Though there's also the argument that there's a strong desire to avoid drilling domestically so those sources will still be there even after foreign sources dry up. Sitting on your strategic reserves while others deplete theirs is a long-term dominance move.

We're barely willing to pay for necessary infrastructure maintenance now, the impetus to build "unnecessary" infrastructure up certainly wouldn't have been there then.

Though that's always going to be a problem because of how fundamentally "the car" changed nearly every facet of modern life in ways most people today barely comprehend. Things like suburbs and grocery stores and fast food and "dating" and the entire modern concept of the teenager mostly only exist as we know them because of how cars radically changed culture. Things you would never mentally associate with cars have been irrevocably shaped by them.

Getting away from the dominance of car dependence would basically require a complete restructuring of modern (Western) culture as a whole. Cell phones are starting to have an impact along those lines, but it's an ongoing process, and there's always going to be growing pains. But it also means it's far harder to just cut out or replace cars than most people realize.

The increase in supply would help, but domestic production doesn't have nearly the impact on domestic prices that people like to think it does. There's this tacit assumption among a whole lot of people that domestic producers will sell locally - at reasonable profit margins that keep prices low for consumers - before selling their oil abroad, but the fact of the matter is that they aren't going to sell to domestic buyers if foreign buyers will pay more. The only savings that can be realized are from the cost of transporting it and the impact on total global supply; in no way does improving domestic production prevent the US (or any other oil-producing country) from being immune to changes in the global oil market.

The exception, of course, is cases like Russia where the global market stops buying their oil. I expect Russians are able to gas up pretty cheaply these days.
