Got into this discussion with some friends.

I argued that you should come out with either a completely centrist view, since Snake fought both communists and anarch-capitalis, or a viewpoint with light socialist views basically barely center-left.

None, it's just a load of people with problems and power. Best take is people are fucking awful and can't be trusted to do anything right.

It's been a while since I played the games, and I haven't played 4, but the idea was that Big Boss wanted to make a home for mercenaries and PMCs to both bring them inner peace with the atrocities they are paid to commit, and outer peace by protecting them from being sold-out by a government that doesn't appreciate them.

Of course, the "wise" solution to this was the UN deciding to kill Big Boss and his entire country because a nation of mercenaries would have too much power... derp

The focal message is anti-war, and opposed to the borderline fetishization and exploitation of "heroes."

I guess one could argue that the message in Peace Walker in particular skews pretty far Left, and the series in general is undeniably socially progressive.

Have you watched Like Stories of Old's recent video on anti-war messages in video games? It's long but you might find it of interest.

Hideo Kojima explicitly is left leaning going by every interview. The games are throwing shade at the military industrial complex. Snake is detached from the military because he knows he's just a pawn, only regards himself as a man who's good at killing.

Death Stranding was inspired by Trump and Brexit.

I think that there's nothing wrong with letting a piece of media look at something in a way you haven't before, but it definitely shouldn't be the bedrock of any position you hold. Maybe more the inspiration to go do some additional reading about things. Peace Walker is actually a pretty good example of this because it gives a lot of perspectives from characters on historical figures and events that people don't often hear.

Sure, but it can allow you to think about things you would not have before.

As in, like everything else, media might try arguing a point, but you should never just believe it blindly.
