This, pretty much. Although far-lefties think California represents all of America. In reality, it's maybe 10%.

I live in Idaho and it's pretty well-known that the aquifers the region I live in depends on are going to run out of water soon-ish. Not very high quality water, but it's what we've got. There's also the matter of us running out of topsoil. Gonna be a disaster.

By population, California has 12% of the US population.

By area California is 5.5% of the contiguous US.

Chances are they'll just coerce Canada into letting Nestle raid their vast freshwater supply for pennies, making Nestle billions while "solving" the water issue in the US.

It's a power consumption issue. You're trading a scarce resource for another one.

Ah yes. Water being gatekept behind money. Literally one of the basic tenants of life itself and gotta throw that finance issue out there like its an actual argument.

Every aspect of life has to be laboured for, money is a representation of labour owed. Absolutely everything in reality is a matter of finance, you don't get to ignore it because it's inconvenient.

If you know where you want to pull that money from then you need a plan and proof of how it's a better use than where you want to take it from. It's easy to handwave at problems, actually doing it is a completely different problem.

Are we getting less rain? You bet.

My coworker did mention something interesting about the drought though. The media would not mention that back then about 30-40 years ago.. we didn't have millions and millions of people compared to today.

Think of all the water consumption by everyone and that's why we are in a drought. We're over populated.

Fertilizer is going to be a major issue next year in the US because two of the biggest exporters of fertilizer were Ukraine and Russia. Now the US doesn't import fertilizer from either of these countries but other nations do, and it won't affect the current crop in North America since most farmers have already obtained their stocks for the year. But it is going to have a major impact later in the year when spring arrives in the southern hemisphere, and that will put pressure on the fertilizer supplies for North America next year.

Fun Fact: Most farmers in the US use ammonia as fertilizer. This requires an enormous amount of energy to produce. Ammonia production uses between 1 and 2% of global energy consumption, accounts for 3% of carbon emissions, and uses 3 to 5% of natural gas production. In the US, 88% of ammonia is used as fertilizer.

its takes a lot of time and resources to do it large-scale and its challenging to dispose of the excess salt because it isnt safe for human consumption and its toxic to wildlife environments because its a holy fuckton of salt.

for every 1 gallon of fresh water that desalination produces, 1.41 gallons of toxic brine are created. More than 50 billion cubic meters (or more than 13.2 trillion gallons) of toxic brine are generated in this way each year, enough to cover the state of Florida with a layer of salty slurry.

Yea, not clicking a Google drive link.

Many pounds of sea salt are produced and consumed every year. Salt is one of the first coveted resources. If it's toxic, it's because of human polution.

With the proper still, drinking desalinated water is perfecting safe and you can use the salt to season food. But drinking salty water is never recommended.
