There's no possible release schedule for this year that will prevent Elden Ring from winning at least some GotY awards. There's also no possible release schedule for this year that will result in Elden Ring winning every GotY award. So... who cares? No matter what other games get recognized, Elden Ring will also be recognized.

If anything, though, coming out in February probably hurt its chances more than any other game will. Post-release hype has a tendency to fade pretty rapidly, and a lot of people will have outright forgotten that Elden Ring came out this year by the time November/December roll around.

Ironically, "everyone foaming at the mouth no matter how much of a mediocre game it is" is more or less how I feel about Elden Ring right now.

From what I can tell, Elden Ring is basically "Dark Souls, Again, Just More of It". Which seems pretty uninspiring to someone who's never given a shit about Dark Souls. Yet people are fellating it like it's the greatest thing they've ever experienced.

I also expect the hype to completely fade away in about another month or so, which is how all of these "womg greetest evar!" games seem to go these days. Recency bias and short-attention spans are pretty much our defining traits as a culture now.

Seems a bit odd to not want other games to come out just because you're praising another game. Game of the year means fuck all anyway. Still Horizon: Forbidden West came out too so I'm afraid the ship has sailed on competition for Elden Ring.

I keep hearing people talk about getting one-shot. Because that's what DS needed...one-shots...on your first playthru...

the majority of people that like dark souls shouldn't be playing dark souls
not to say that ER isn't hard or obtuse, but there have been like 4 DS games already
you shouldn't be complaining about difficulty

BotW is better then all the DS games, BotW has physics, in game mechanics, a larger world
I don't see why botw2 wouldn't win other than graphics, which are in the eye of the beholder for most people

Whoa! BotW was a good game and better than mediocre. And Elden Ring IS a masterpiece.

BotW has a larger world that has mostly nothing in it, I enjoyed BotW but while everyone was bitching about weapon durability I hated how much empty space there was. The map should have been like half the size it was to actually make the open world feel more filled.

Huge map size means jack shit if it's mostly just random enemies around and trees and mountains. It's basically like saying the best open world game ever would have the map size of Earth, even though the vast majority of it would just be random houses and other things you see on Earth.

if you don't like the mini dungeons then yeah it feels empty
for everyone else it's a great 80+ hour game that feels like it takes half that amount of time when you actually play it
