Make no mistake, Elden Ring is to the Souls subgenre what Breath of the Wild was to the Zelda franchise; it took a classic dungeon-diving formula and opened it up, adding more choice, nuance, and combat flexibility in the process. It feels destined to kickstart a wave of "did you know you could do this?" YouTube videos, and a deeper discussion of build-crafting. Elden Ring isnt Dark Souls 4 or just Big Souls, but its damn close, and represents the evolution the series needed and manages to be everything else we wanted it to be.

Combining the deep and challenging combat FromSoftware is known for with a vast and varied world that's always a pleasure to explore, Elden Ring is quite simply incredible. From the moment you step foot into The Lands Between you'll be engrossed, and while you'll no doubt experience some setbacks on your adventure such as a boss that at first seems impossible to defeat there's always somewhere else to go to cool off, pick yourself up, and perhaps power yourself up before returning to have another go. That is to say, you don't just play Elden Ring; you live in its world for hours at a time. It will consume you, but you'll willingly throw yourself into its maw with fervour.

Elden Ring feels like the game FromSoftware has been building up to ever since Demons Souls released in 2009. A huge open world filled to the brim with challenging enemies, characters sporting obvious influence from George R. R. Martin, and the typical drip-feed of lore FromSoftware is famous for crafting all combine to form an intoxicating adventure you wont soon forget. Yes, the formulaic nature of these games is absolutely showing after three console generations, but as the saying goes, if it aint broke, dont fix it!

Mine's coming on the 2nd of next month and has to be in quarantine for another day. That is if the cargo flight doesn't get cancelled which has a 50/50 chance with the snowy weather here.

TVs are dirt cheap these days, unless they spiked in the pandemic and I missed it, I bought a 65 inch 4K for 600 bucks a couple years ago

Its a cross-gen game so Im sure itll look fine at 1080p, although if you have a PS5 already youd definitely benefit from a new screen.

I feel like most Performance modes in games end up barely above 1080p - stuff like Guardians is 1080p and still has stutters on Performance mode, and we'll only get more games in this boat as the generation progresses. 4K TVs will mainly make a difference for people who play on Resolution mode. I assume Elden Ring will be in a similar boat.

It went down to a 94 eventually.

Realistically I expect Elden Ring to drop to about a 95 as well when the 6 and 4/10 clickbait reviews eventually arrive.

Above 95! So 96-100. GoW is a 94 last I checked. The Disco Elysium and Fata Morgana versions are late ports/upgrades with barely any reviews so kind of against the spirit lol. Skyrim 360 is a good one for single launch versions. Bioshock had both platforms (PC and 360) at a 96 whereas a cross-platform average could bring the others down.

I didn't even register pre-patch blighttown issues because I was so blown away from the game at the time

Well PC Skyrim is also slightly lower, whereas there are so few PS3 reviews it wouldnt affect a mathematical average that much.

Also I dont hate indie games! Its just that its a port of an older game with 10 reviews, its not a straight comparison with a new game with 100 reviews. It also isnt even the first western release. Different scope.

I love Fata Morgana, but it's obviously not a fair comparison to the conversation that's being had here.

Enough people with similar tastes to me rave about them so I assume I'd like them, but aesthetically they just look so grimy and unappealing to me. And idk if I'd like the combat. I'm sure they're great though!

Ah I was gonna get ps5 but that's tempting. I have to imagine the ps5 would run better than my computer though, it's on a 2070
