I was thinking about the Resident Evil series in particular. FF VII Remake also counts and probably others I forgot.

Let's say someone wants to play the RE or FF series to completion. Would you suggest them play only the original games (and/or ports), can the remakes substitute the original games, or would you suggest them play both the original and the remakes?

I would consider Twin Snakes a mainline Metal Gear game. MGS4 treats it as one. In this case, I would say you only need to play MGS1 or Twin Snakes, but not both.

In FFVII's case, I'd probably recommend playing both since they're going to be different enough experiences to make both worthwhile.

It's kind of a case by case basis, at least in your example in the second graph. Like, RE2R and FF7R are absolutely mainline experiences wholly separate from their originals, but nobody would be missing out on, say, skipping FF3 and FF4's 3D versions in favor of a different version.

I think it really depends on the remake. Like I think REMake totally replaced original RE1 for people, but RE 3s remake isnt as straightforward of an upgrade so the original probably still merits playing.

FFVII Remake is enough of its own thing too that even whenever its complete it wont just totally usurp VIIs place in the series.

Yeah I was thinking of REmake just now as well - it's kind of the opposite of the FF3/4 example I gave, where you have a game that actually did supplant the original for many people.

Remakes substitute for the original imo

FF7R is an exception because it's not actually a remake, it's a different game with a misleading title

Lots of remakes are similarly different experiences. Zero Mission absolutely does not replace Metroid. At best you can just call it a much better game or something but it's not the same game.

I even hesitate to put RE1 there but I'll accept it.

Sure

What I hate though is when Nintendo did those FE1 and FE3 remakes on DS and counted them as new mainline entries

I typically do. They're pretty much meant to be I think. It's usually what all future canon follows after that.

Well, I dunno. I dont think anyone considers Lets Go Pikachu/Eevee to be the canon version of the events in Kanto.

It's kind of a case-by-case basis, but I'd usually say one or the other.

I guess in the same sense that Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee aren't remakes of Pokemon Red/Blue

Yeah it's all context-dependent.

FF7R and the RE remakes feel different enough to be considered new main games. Something like Bluepoint Demon's Souls does not. Pokemon games bridge the gap between old and new and tend to modernize the games to an extend where I also feel like they count. And things like Persona Golden/Royal and Nier v1.whatever I mentally classify as expanded editions and not a new game (though I haven't played Nier's yet so).

I thought of LoZ, and I consider the remakes just optional ways to play the respective games. You don't have to play all three Link's Awakenings to play all Zelda games, for example.

Very much depends on the remake. It depends on how much difference there actually is between the original game and the remake. I'd say a FFVII Remake is far too different of an experience, and so is RE2 Remake.

From what I've played, I would consider Metroid: Zero Mission not as a replacement for Metroid 1, it changed too much and looks/feels too different. I also played Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on 3DS, but that game gives you basically the same experience as the GBA game because the graphical upgrade is noticeable but doesn't really affect the gameplay experience.

Then there is something like FF3 DS, which is somewhere in between, but the NES version never had an English release before then. I think that despite the 3D and some changes to the mechanics and the jobs, I would consider that to be mainline because of availability reasons at that time and because it was still similar enough to the original in most ways.
