I love Suda 51's games but they are the equivalent of schlocky B-movies. I think that sort of thing should be considered in the review.

I skimmed it and some of the stuff does sound pretty bad like the working minigames being removed and yet another instance of a barren open world. The story also sounds terrible. Tbh I didn't really have that much faith in it to begin with

Seeing the VERY WIDE discrepancy in these reviews regarding the game's story tells me that everyone saying the game has 'brilliant writing' is straight up lying

79 MC is probably too generous

It's a sequel to a slapstick game about assassins killing each other in ranked battles that get progressively more batshit insane as you move up the ranks, with one of the battles involving a giant mecha battle against the local college football star and his band of groupies that just so happen to be the local cheerleader squad.

It's weird to me that anyone cares what any reviewer gives any game. I've never paid attention to game reviews. Just watch two minutes of gameplay and you'll know.

2 minutes of a bunch of jumbled shots that don't go into depth or a2 minute video of them walking down a street and going into a building gives more insight than a review that comes from playing most the game and cataloguing the features and how well done they implemented?

You're wrong in most cases. But ok. It's very easy to hide game flaws in short videos. Have fun avoiding reviews and just trusting companies showing you all the parts right before the glitch throws the game off.

I won't say Suda51 is like the best video game maker, but his narratives are often something you have to think about from a very different perspective from a typical video game because they're often commentaries on the very idea of playing games. We're far past the point of video game reviewers being professionally capable enough to pick up on such subtleties.

They often misrepresent stories and characters, play games at the lowest difficulty and often overlook more than half of the game's mechanics that will affect most of the playerbase. They also don't really finish games because yes, they're on a timer, but maybe they shouldn't be pressured to release reviews by the time the game releases. There is also almost a complete lack of coverage on optional content or comprehensive online experiences

With such poor standards, am I supposed to believe that these reviewers are capable of anything even remotely along the level of say Destructoid's near mad men levels of analysis of No More Heroes 1 or Killer7?

Also the short clips mentioned, yeah that's a pretty bad method too. Maybe the idea of buying games on the first week with little information is poor practice in general

Probably not. Suda's games generally don't tend to score all that well with critics.

review says you don't fight through levels to get to bosses anymore, and there's only one beam katana, but they keep the side-job minigames despite the world being invaded by aliens and shit. sounds lame

I find this incredibly hard to believe considering the sheer amount of footage of Travis fighting regular enemies in different areas.

NMH 1 and 2 got scores in the low 80s on wii and switch. And user reviews are in the mid 80s.

Fuck gamespot for 40/100. Hope they patch up performance issues in the over world, which seems to be the major complaint.

Anyway, 76 (now) is a solid score and it seems like all the nmh fans will enjoy it.

Travis Strikes Again plays in a very clunky way much like the first NMH. There likely hasn't been much iteration in how the game controls. I'm pretty sure Suda has been developing with the Unreal engine but I doubt NMH3 has done much iteration in the terms of controls.

NMH is kind of a fan letter to gaming itself. It's self-aware and esoteric. It's pretty much exclusively for nerds. The first two games are great but the bar for gaming was much lower for gaming then, that is to say we expect more from our games now.

Simple fact is, NMH isn't gonna be a series for everyone. Suda51 games usually are technically janky with narratives that will likely fly over a lot of reviewers heads at best or seem offensive at worst. NMH in particular is basically completely submerged in gamer/anime nerd centric narration and comedy which also makes it kinda polarizing.

So, I can take a 4/10 review just by assuming one or many things didn't agree with the reviewer.

NMH is so meta at this point, it probably makes Suda 51's dick hard that it is having such polarizing reviews.

It would be crazy if the game sold poorly only to become rare and sought after on the Switch.
