Just wondering.

I think all the FF healers have robes rather than armor.

Not sure which series would be a go to for a lot of armored healers. Fire Emblem I guess? Even there it's mostly robes tho.

Dragon Quest goes the "armored healer" route. I remember being surprised when I first got into the series because it turned my expectations about "fragile healers" on their head.

I'm not sure I'd call any of the Dragon Quest healers armored, except for maybe Angelo. They aren't completely fragile, but they're still frailer than pretty much everyone except the mages. Unless you're counting the various heroes as healers, then it might count.

Is that more in the earlier games? Serena definitely isn't armored...

D&D, even more heavy armored than the frontliners.
Everything else, fully clothed, but looking like robes. Maybe some shoulders. TF2 medic with the Nun Hood is like the prime specimen.

I played a cleric in EQ for a very long time. Every game based on D&D 3E I seemed to end up playing one, too.

I mean, they're not tanks, but Clerics in DQ are capable of equipping metal armor and weapons like swords and spears that many other characters can't. They tend to be sturdier than healers in other JRPGs who mostly get robes and magic wands in their equipment lists.

I guess I fall on the JRPG side, so I picture more flimsy mage types. But I'm certainly aware that healing and tanking is a natural combination.

"Cleric" is more questionable but "healer" definitely implies robes to me.

There seems to be a gendered thing to it. Serena and Milly don't have as heavy equipment options as Kiryl or Angelo. Although they're still capable of using somewhat strong weapons. That said the Cleric and Priest classes in DQ3 and 9 allow heavier armor use regardless of gender, and I think of the generic class as the template that specific characters align to, even if they don't follow them exactly (every game has it's differences after all).

Yeah, this.

There are different ways to approach "healer." Most JRPGs tend to go the White Mage route as opposed to a Paladin, whereas D&D goes with heavy armor with its Paladins and Clerics (though sometimes your healer ends up being a Druid or Divine Soul Sorceress, who only get light armor). I won't include WRPGs because you can usually be whatever you want.

Either or. Moderately armored.

A character that only heals is a strategic liability unless the game is specifically designed to need that. (Action economy, yo)

my first rpg healer was probably cloud or barret with restore-all equipped, so I'm fine with all rounders

I also spent a weird amount of time playing a flash series called Mardek RPG, and the main character in that was a tanky armored healer type.

Also every reasonable Bethesda healer is just a warrior or thief with some healing spells
