For a Nintendo game, its pretty wild how much effort gets put into the narrative. Like, even the manual for the NES game details the formation of the galactic federation, space pirates, hunters, and even hints at the origin of metroids and their role in desolating SR388.

Compare it to a contemporary like, Zelda, which was essentially just Ganon stole a magic dorito. Go get it back. Hell, a lot of 8-bit RPGs dont have as detailed world building. <_<

Then theres the fact that the story actually progresses from game to game. The first four entries feel more like serialized episodes in an on-going saga rather than isolated adventures. The world is constantly evolving.

Metroids go from being an imminent threat to the brink of extinction. From a dangerous weapon to a sympathetic life form with a legitimate role in the eco-system. The Federation goes from generic good-guy empire to shady military black site experiments.

Not that the series is high literature, or anything. But its just surprising how competent it is coming from a 4 hour video game made by a company that hates stories. >_>

Yes

and with much, much more mature themes

Bounty Hunters, scantily clad females,
extinction, espionage, technology, etc

Metroid has always been very special.

Other M could use a redux ver.

Take out basically all the cutscenes related to flashbacks & you have a perfectly functional game.

Not to mention all of the superfluous information in the Prime series scan logs, which details the Space Pirate command structure and equipment, the histories of various alien races, animal life cycles and behaviour, and even simple stuff like what everyone thinks of Samus.

I found it amusing that some people from the Federation considered Samus to be a mythical figure similar to that of Santa Claus.

I love when the Space Pirates realise that Samus and Dark Samus are two different people, and they're like "Great, there's TWO of her now!"

That depends on the game. Metroid Prime is dense with backstory while something like Zero Mission has barely there cutaways that tell you right next to nothing. Outside of game, though, I agree, with the caveat that one of the reasons Metroid actually has a story is because it ripped off some popular franchises from the 80s.

Why are there miniature Phantoon underwater??

Why does Draygons head look like a hodgepodge crown of gargoyles?

Why do I get attacked by un-screwattackable Space Pirates after killing Draygon?

Why is it so oddly difficult & trollish to run the map leading to the Plasma beam?

Why does Miridia look like a Sonic level?

Why are there parasites everywhere?

What.......

Probably why Nintendo haven't produce much of them compared to their other series. Since Dread broke preorder records maybe they should start making more games like Metroid instead of Mario themed game number 42.

I don't know if there's a canon explanation, but I believe the Space Pirates were experimenting on it. iirc in Prime there's a log in which the pirates detail how they're experimenting with radiation to speed up and slow down Metroid growth.

Also this.

Don't the Metroids in Prime actually grow larger when they feed on pirates? I might be mis-remembering.

Those logs had no right to be as amazing as they were.

The Space Pirate ones were downright hilarious. You could really learn about their quirks and personalities from their day-to-day memoirs. Really brought the whole universe to life.

If I knew how to draw, I've had an idea for a little comic parody of the Space Pirates juxtaposition between the combat and the science factions. The combat section has Ridley addressing troops an being all tactical over a map of the area. Meanwhile in the science section, everything's on fire, monsters are running around and a derpy Space Pirate in a lab coat is just screaming "THROW PHAZON AT IT!" while another scientist with a Metroid eating his head gives him a goofy smile and a thumbs up.

They would have to redo the whole game, because the actual gameplay looks terrible too (I was going to pick it up when it was new but this guy working at GameStop did his best to convince me not to buy it). I mean it is an action game but you have to stop, stand still and go into first person to shoot missiles for some reason and in order to get missiles and health back you have to stand still and concentrate instead of killing enemies for drops.

Story wise this game didnt even need to exist. I never had to question the plot of Fusion, and yet they felt the need to make this a prequel to it and contradict a bunch of characterizations made in that game. I have no idea how they fucked it up that hard.

The base engine is pretty good. It's just plagued by terrible design decisions, like stop-and-squat instead of dead baddies turning into heath-balls and missile-ammo, awkward 1st-person missiles because it just had to use sideways joycon for some reason, and the sudden pixel-hunt sequences that kill any sense of momentum completely dead.

I think the way i got into Metroid as a kid was, I tried to beat Super Metroid numerous times (and failed) and basically got into the series with Prime, Fusion, and Zero. I think I got my butt kicked in Prime, landed in Fusion, may have gotten my butt kicked in Zero, went back and beat Zero, definitely actually got my butt kicked in Fusion by Hydra, managed to beat Prime, managed to beat Fusion, beat Zero, and quietly developed a taste for Metroid.
