Board 8 > Best of the Band (Week 1): Daft Punk

I figure this could be a fun project; each week, I'll take a band and everyone can rank their top 10-15 songs. With Daft Punk breaking up, I figure they would be a good place to start.

Rules:

1. You must rank at least 10 and up to 15 songs by the artist
2. Credited collaborations are allowed (for example, in the case of Daft Punk, The Weeknd's "Starboy" and "I Feel It Coming" are allowed); notable samples are not (so no "Stronger" by Kanye West, though I guess the live performance with Daft Punk qualifies?)
3. If you vote for a remix, live version, etc., please clarify if you are not okay with it being combined with the original with a note. I'm not sure if this will be an issue with Daft Punk, but based on experiences on another forum, rigid separation can cause both versions to underperform. The final ranking will represent all versions of the song and I will mention any specific version listed if there are multiple. (if memory serves, the Alive tracks are distinct enough to count on their own if people feel like ranking them)
4. I am mulling over whether to include songs from side projects that otherwise would not be covered. In the case of Daft Punk, I'm wondering if we should allow Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You," so feel free to include it in your ranking but maybe rank an additional song in case others dissuade me
5. The deadline for this week will be Sunday, February 28 at midnight PST - I am making these last a week so I can calculate the results and do a presentation without overwhelming myself
6. Feel free to suggest artists for future weeks, though I will have final say as the host; if there is a push for a band I have no interest in covering, I will gladly let someone take over the presentation

I use this and a music forum as my main forums, and they tend to go by week and month when similar topics on board 8 seem to go by day. And I always seem to miss a topic due to that short window here, so I sometimes give up trying to consistently voice my opinion. Between the desire to give people time to think about their lists and the time it will take to calculate the results, a week felt right (the other forum does a similar series but also covering the band's albums which I probably should have considered, but they give a full month).

Which, I feel like a topic series like this could run dry quickly if done too fast. There don't seem to be too many bands where most of us will have a top 10-15 we all feel strongly about.

Anyway, I was already considering doing Radiohead next if no one suggested anything, so that will be week 2 if people want to get a headstart.

Don't know Daft Punk well enough to contribute. I'd just be voting for the three songs I can name and skewing the results. I'll keep an eye out if you run an artist I know better, though.

Did a re-listen to Homework today. It feels so experimental and almost raw at points. It starts off strong, kind of drags a bit in the middle, and then ends with some bangers. Didn't change my mind on my favorite song.

Also did a re-listen to Stardust: Music Sounds Better With You. Still love it. It's going to make my list.

Re-listened to Discovery. Goddamn that's some good shit. There's basically no skips on the entire album. Really tough to pick a favorite song.

Listened to Alice 1997 for the first time. Don't ask me why I never listened before. The first few minutes are alright but then it finds a groove and it's a fun time.

Listened to the few songs on Musique, Vol 1 that are "new" (or at least that I hadn't listened to before because they were on a "main" album). Not much to say about those really. It was amusing to see how many songs on this "Greatest Hits" album were the same ones I marked as my top picks from Homework and Discovery.

Listened to Daft Club for the first time. This is inessential. There a couple of decent remixes but overall you can skip this. I won't be including this in my song ranking even though this is technically listed as a Daft Punk album, as I'm not sure remixes by other artists should count.

Re-listened to Human After All. Clearly the worst of the first 3 main albums. There's a few songs I like, including my irrational love of Brainwasher, but there's also some hard skips here. I know many of these songs were used to good use with Alive 2007 but standalone this is really not a great album.

Just re-listened to Random Access Memories...

Oh God...OH GOD! How...how could I have been so wrong? This is a GREAT album, front to back!

It's crazy to think about the evolution of Daft Punk from Homework to this album. I called Homework "experimental" in the sense of being raw and unpolished; I could almost say the same thing here for Random Access Memories just from the opposite end of the spectrum - a refinement of disparate influences. There's the obvious and overt disco references but it's so much more eclectic than that, with some very theatrical and orchestral turns.

I can see why I wouldn't have liked this very much when it came out. I was (and still am) into much more upbeat, "dance-y" EDM/techno, and there's a lot of songs here that are slower tempo and take time to get into, Touch being an easy example. There's also a lot of "robot voice" (for lack of a better term) that rankles a little.

I should get to listening to the last 3 albums today and get up a song ranking of some sort.

Re-listened to the Tron: Legacy soundtrack. Not much to say here. It's a soundtrack. It's fine. Other than Derezzed there's not much that really jumped out to me.

Listened to Tron: Legacy Reconfigured for the first time. Much more to my taste. There's some fun stuff here.

Re-listened to Alive 2007. One of my favorite albums of all time and truly an example of something that's the sum of more than its parts. Aside from the coda, it's hard to pick individual songs as favorites because this really is best listened to in full as a complete piece. I love the bits of the audience that we get to hear and I think it brings a lot in capturing the energy of the live performance.

This was the album that made me realize there's art in being a DJ. It's more than just playing a bunch of songs. It's about creating "flow" and reading the energy of the audience and all sorts of stuff I don't really understand other than knowing that there's a certain emotional connection that you make and play off of.

This was a fun exercise. Can't say I'm likely to do it again for too many other artists but for Daft Punk I make an exception.

Now I've got to somehow make a list of my top 15...

Maybe I'm just not in the know, but I've never really thought of Daft Punk being all that popular? So I dunno if they're the best measure for whether this is a topic series with some legs or not. Feel like you'd have to do a week of the Beatles or Pink Floyd or something like that to get an accurate reading.

Just as a suggestion, you could try switching it to having people list their top 5 songs by a band. Putting together a list of 15 might be a bit too much work for some users, whereas its pretty simple to casually pop into a topic and post a few songs.

a higher barrier to entry makes for more interesting results but will limit participation. you have to accept that there's not that many users here, fewer still who are passionate enough about music at all to think out a list of 15 songs, and then fewer again for each individual band you pick

First, if anyone else does want to participate, I'll set a firm deadline for early Sunday morning; as in, before I wake up (which is usually around 8 CST). And then I'll aim to share the results once I'm up that morning (Sunday will be the best day for me to reveal results in the future, so probably good to aim for that now).

I definitely want to keep to the top 10 minimum; I don't want people just dropping the big singles, since that's predictable. If I continue this project, I think I will make the period two weeks so people actually have time to explore (Daft Punk has a rather small discography, all things considered). Alternatively, I wonder if anyone would be interested in doing something like ranking all the tracks from specific albums? That way, everyone will have the same set of songs to rank and it would only require about an hour each week to listen. Like, instead of picking our favorites from the entire Daft Punk discography, just a single topic focused on Discovery? It might be more accessible to ask people to check out Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band than every major song by the Beatles...
