... Doesn't pretty much any game count as a party game if you play it at a party? I've always thought that "party" is kind of a bizarre genre since it seems pretty loosely defined even by gaming genre standards, though most definitions I've seen of it would not include Smash or other fighting games.

I kind of agree. Plus, some people call specific games party games because they always play it at their parties and stuff...

PSA: Just because a game has "fighting" in it, doesn't make it a fighting game in the same sense of Street Fighter, King of Fighters, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, etc.

You aren't constantly locked onto your opponent, there are no high-low attacks, no traditional lifebars, the goal isn't to knock your opponent off the screen(although a couple games have ring-outs)....

There is no discernible reason to group it together with the like of the aforementioned games because it hardly shared anything in common with them that isn't shared among all action games to some degree.

If you were to work in a video game store and someone asks you "Hey, I really like games like Tekken and Virtua Fighter"(or "Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat"), you aren't going to say, "Well, based on that you should give Smash a try".

The opposite is true as well.

I can't believe this weak argument isn't dead in the water already.

"Party game" is sort of a derogative term that actual fighting game players have used specifically to label Smash as such.

It really has no meaning. "Arena Fighter" might be more appropriate, but it doesn't really have anything in common with the other games that's more often used for either.

The only games that Smash really shares anything with are the cheap knockoffs that are intentionally done in the same style to cash off of it's hype, such as PSABR and that Onimusha game.

If there's one thing you can give Smash credit for, it's that there really is no other game like it that isn't designed with the specific purpose of imitation.

While Smash doesn't have high attacks (well, some characters kind of do), it does have low attacks. And you can make it have almost a traditional life bar. It's not a bar, but has a life percent you get down to zero. It's like see you HP number instead of an bar where you don't know the exact amount...

Way to misinterpret the entire post there.

Quit getting so hung up on the name of the genre.

In what world was that supposed to make any sort of point about the debate at hand, anyways?

Your characters can attack low and sweep enemies, but it doesn't function in the way that every one of the other games does.

Blocking has no distinction between high and low attacks in Smash, whereas that's a universal mechanic in every fighting game since the dawn of time.

I understand what you're saying about the numbers, but that's a moot point outside of stamina mode, which isn't the main gameplay of Smash.

Because genre's are large and wide. All the games you mentioned are Fighting games, some might just be in different sub-genres. The similarities are enough to put them all in the same genre.

Smash, Arms (unusual controls or not, it's absolutely a "real fighting game"), and Pokken Tournament (Bamco developed that one, so it's not actually first-party, but I'd count it).

The only meaningful distinction between fighting games and action games is a focus on PvP. Everything else you listed is just a consequence of most of the genre's devs having no imagination beyond "let's clone Street Fighter because people liked that one" and fans eating it up because they also lack such imagination.

LoL, no, because the combat system generally aligns more with what one expects from an RTS than an action game (although there's a case to be made that it's a subset of ARPG). CoD, maybe, but the PvP in question is generally presumed to be 1v1 (or at the very least, on a smaller scale), which CoD generally is not.
