Few things, George.

One. Remember this is your dialogue. You wrote it. You and perhaps Jonathan Hales, but given how possessive you are, I'm-a assume you. Defending your own dialogue saying people "don't get it" comes off a little... mmm... pretentious.

Two. Basing Star Wars off of older styles of film serial is a nice homage, and it definitely worked, initially. Other Star Wars projects have tried similar things with varying success. A great recent success is The Mandalorian, which draws heavily from Westerns. Problem I see in the case of AOTC is that when you dedicate so much of the production effort to modern CGI and bombastic battle scenes, you're actually stepping away from those homages and into your own thing. Then, when you do use homages, it can come off quite jarring and disconnecting. Furthermore, those old melodramatic scenes worked well back then because they weren't just dialogue. They were paced, shot, and acted to play up the melodrama. None of that was done in AOTC.

Three. People had more than one problem with Attack of the Clones.

New Hope was essentially saved in editing, with Ben's scene in the Death Star security office being the last remnant of Lucas's long-winded dialogue.

It's equally right to say George Lucas doesn't understand why people like Star Wars.

I mean, it's always been meant to be melodramatic and kind of corny since it's homaging old pulp cinema, but that's not an excuse to be straight up bad.

Ill say that I never really had a problem with the dialogue itself. (Though I have a higher tolerance for cheesiness >_>)

But the directing just couldnt make it work. When Anakin is delivering these lines he doesnt sound like a 30s movie serial hero. He sounds like a high schooler reciting Shakespeare <_<

I feel like Star Wars was one of those films where it was good, but not because the guy in charge was good. Almost accidentally good. People didn't spot this for ages because Empire was even better and the odds of this happening with a hack at the helm are astronomically low. However, everything that has happened since Empire supports the theory.
