to clarify: if you have some legit reason why you don't drink, you're excluded from my distrust. reasons like family history of abuse, issues in the past with bad behavior/violence, got a DUI, are allergic, and/or about one thousand other reasons. i always respect people who abstain for a good reason. however, if you just don't drink "just because", you're sus af, and wouldn't turn my back to you, ok?

we have a group that meets every week at a local pub (most of this year we've been doing it in a friend's back yard though), and every now and then a friend of a friend shows up, and sometimes these fucking people decline the offer of a beer, or other drink. now, it's fine if they decline, but every now and then people ask why, and some just shrug their stupid shoulders and are like, "hurrr, i just don't, have any soda?"

these people don't get invited back, and are put on my list of possible sociopaths, ok?

I'm a teetotaler myself. I don't have any interest in having my mental faculties dulled by chemicals. I prefer the opposite, stimulant beverages such as coffee or tea.

I don't have any problem with other people drinking, I used to buy liquor for my spouse and I watched an entire TV series on the manufacture of various types of alcohol so I know more about the production of whiskey, gin, vodka, beer, etc, than the average person. But drinking just isn't for me.

I like alcohol. I use to drink pretty much every weekend with co-workers. I eventually stopped because I started working in a different area. Now I drink with other co-workers. But not every weekend. Probably next weekend, though...

This. I like trying new drinks (mixed drinks, beer, wine, whatever), but I absolutely am not a fan of being drunk or hungover. It's not that I don't drink, but I drink so rarely these days I can't actually remember when I last had a drink besides the good glass of red wine I had with my Thanksgiving meal.

I hear you. I've had to limit myself to 2-3 a week. I was drinking literally every night, to various degrees. It absolutely became a habit for all over a year, but I managed to chill out significantly, ok?

I was addicted to 3 drugs at once, and eventually went into a manic depressive psychotic state and couldn't feel the happiness I usually got from the drugs. I quit all drugs I was addicted to cold turkey... and got 10 times worse, and stayed that way for a month.

It was almost impossible to leave my room without freaking out.

So I don't do any drugs at all anymore, I'm not afraid of them, but I do hate them in a spiteful way. I wouldn't tell you that at a BBQ though because it would ruin your good vibes. I'd just be like "I'm too tired"

Eh not really. For me it just makes other things better I dont like being drunk for the sake of being drunk. Once drunk I need stimuli to enjoy it. Video games music or socialization. Just being drunk and existing is just as boring to me as just existing.

Yes, it is. I've had enough variations (from wine, to beer, to rum etc) to know no configuration works for me. At all. It would be extremely silly and desperate to continue in a foolish pursuit, no?

Mind you I'm from the Caribbean which has some of the best liquor/spirits in the entire world. If that didn't convince me to be a drinker nothing will. Apart from that I have some drunks in the family which doesn't help the case. Again, this region is known for its alcohol and has a heavy drinking culture. Another thing we have in common with the Brits. In normal times, droves of them flock down here just to get wasted in the sun, its embarrassing.

I don't drink alcohol for 2 main reasons:

1. I'd prefer not to become an alcoholic, and the best way to kick a habit is to never start it in the first place
2. Somewhat related to the above reason, and to keep a long story short, I can be quite the asshole when I'm sober - I hate to think how much of one I am when I'm drunk

it's half-half. saying you don't like the taste is kind of bullshit, because different kind of drink combinations are literally endless. something out there will be tasty to you, saying otherwise is objectively wrong, ok?

but at the same time, we're usually the ones buying the booze (others are welcome to contribute, but it's not mandatory), and we mostly always get craft beer. some people don't like the taste of craft beer... some people don't like the taste beer, period. as someone who drinks more for taste over getting fucked up, i can understand if someone doesn't want to drink what we purchased, ok?

Maybe, but if someone tries 10 combinations at the recommendation of others and hates ALL of them, they can't really be expected to keep trying on their own. Especially since alcohol ain't cheap.

I do agree with this. Technically, you can make it taste like anything. I had one called the Apple Pie shot. And it didnt taste like alcohol at all. It was good, though. You can make an alcohol drink taste like other drinks easily enough... If you know the right mixes, that is...

No you deliberately changed the meaning of what I said. Besides that I already explained in that same post why the logic in your first paragraph falls apart. Trying endless combinations of drinks until you find one you like is beyond stupid. Especially when we are talking about something that damages your body on a basic level. You are not trying different types of lettuce. And even then that would get very foolish after sometime when it's quite apparent your palate simply has no taste for lettuce.

I wouldn't know if it's fun cause I've never been drunk. But drinking "deceptive" alcohol can put you way past drunk. That's how people end up in hospital or exploited. I haven't drank anything in 3 years. We got South African wine at my previous job (they have some of the best wines over there) for Christmas. It was well liked apparently. So I foolishly decided to have a glass on New Years night. It was awful to me and I didn't get past a few sips. I ended up chucking the rest of that glass and the entire bottle down the sink. That was my final attempt at drinking.

I should say there's a slight caveat in everything I posted, which is that I do enjoy rum cake. It's a holiday cake we have here and is very rich. The alcohol kick is not masked but very different than if you were drinking a rum shot directly. That's the only way I will ever consume alcohol.

It can. Which is why you go with friends. Good friends know when you stop you. Though, most people do know their limits. And bartenders are pretty good at figuring it out, as well. And tbh, being drunk makes things taste better for me. Food and other drinks.

The thing is adding stuff to alcohol makes the taste change hence why we have different beverages. These drinks also taste different from other drinks. It's not hard to grasp. Also no drinking drinks that contain alcohol but taste different isn't "inviting trouble" it's mostly leading to fun and relaxation depending the person.

I never said anything about drinking to get drunk. How did you even get that. I mean if it should taste like it has in alcohol. Whether that taste good or not is preference. But the point is it should not taste like what its masquerading as. If you're drinking some fruit based alcoholic drink and it taste like fruit juice, why are you not, you know, just drinking fruit juice. Instead you're drinking something that tastes the same but has extra risk attached. That's very silly and I don't get how you people are missing the point. Liking the tastes of recognised alcoholic drinks is another matter entirely.
