I didn't know it came out this week, AND it's on gamepass! I've only played a few hour of it, but I am loving it so far. Definitely laughed at the fact that Ireland is officially the tutorial island now!

Is the game actually accessible to someone who doesn't already understand it? I gave up on CK2 within an hour.

I think the tutorial this time is like, 1000x better than the one in 2. In 2, I had to like watch videos on youtube to understand what was going on. Here, the tutorial actually felt like it taught you the basics of the game. Of course keep in mind I come from having experience in 2, so that probably helps me understand 3 as well.

I felt like I understood the basics of how to play the game by the time the tutorial finished. There are things I still wanted to know more about, but the way tooltips work made it simple to learn more.

That said I still feel like I ought to watch some videos or streams of other players to better understand what the general flow of play should be.

I've got a lot of hours in CK2 and the important thing is not to have the mindset of min-maxing or focus solely on conquering everything in sight. You don't have to build a perfect character either. Just roll with whatever traits they have, even if it's not the objectively best choice for you or your empire.

That is not to say you can't play optimally but I had a lot of fun roleplaying and dealing with all the randomness and bad events.

Yeah, not sure if CK3 is easier to play or my experience playing CK2 for like 10 hours a decade ago carried through.

I still constantly realize I dont understand something but those things dont feel like they are stopping me from playing.

like culture. Who knows what the point is of that lol

Yeah...no, I didn't even get to the point where I could figure out where everything did. I was just overwhelmed with menus and minutiae. The tutorial did nothing to help that.

When learning CK2, at least, the best way to learn the game is by watching youtube Let's Plays.

I had really good fun in a CK2 campaign minding my own business and then my son accidentally ended up being married to the daughter and heir to the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire and I quickly lost control of wtf was happening.

Took control of Ireland a while ago, about to make the kingdom of wales. Not bad, not bad. Thinking about possible inroads to start taking land from Scotland..

Oh, I did wind up having to fight two wars in a row. I fabricated the claim to the Duchy of Deheubarth (part of Wales), but by the time I was prepared to go to war for it someone ELSE started fighting them for basically the same thing. So once I beat the current ruler of Deheubarth and took over the land, I THEN had to fight the other guy who wanted to same land. And all that happened while my Marshall AND King died, so a lot of shit was going down at once. It all worked out at the end, though!

Kidnapping is pretty OP. I went and imprisoned a bunch of kings and dukes and even the Pope and got a shitload of money ransoming them back.

I remember reading a playthrough article about this game once and I couldn't even follow what was happening in the damn playthrough so I can only imagine how complex the game is. Or maybe playing the game would have given a better idea of what the playthrough was describing

I'm not sure how accessible it is to someone completely new to grand strategy games, or even 4X games, but the UI, tooltips and tutorial here are miles ahead of CK2's best learning practice of 'go watch Quill18'

The tutorial character is a good starting campaign to, as you have a lot of turmoil in Britannia but you're mostly isolated from it so you have time to set some plans in motion.

anyway... I played this for 24 hours over the weekend. Game is good

Hey so when I join a Holy War why do I have nobody I can choose from to designate as Beneficiary? The last time we did one I had quite a few options but now there are none. I'm still the same ruler and nothing significant has changed in my rule.
