For those who are unaware, Jerry Lewis plays a clown who's thrown into Auschwitz for mocking Hitler in a drunken stupor. While in prison, he performs his act for the children on the other side of a fence, and this leads the prison guards to enlist him to entertain children who were headed for "deportation". Yes, it gets worse. The entire plot synopsis has been known for years, but I'll leave it there because there's a chance that we'll all get to see it in 2025. Can you believe it? Jerry Lewis paid for the reels and kept them locked in a vault, and he would periodically show the film to a handful of people. As time went on, he began to regret it more and more - there's unproven discourse that Jerry Lewis put the 10 year restriction on The Day the Clown Cries to make it less likely that he would be alive when it was released to the public. My year 12 teacher said that Holocaust survivors don't like The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Life is Beautiful because it trivialises what they went through and makes a mockery of it, or in Striped Pyjamas' case, asks you to sympathise with Nazis when ~~their son is gassed and burnt instead of the Jewish boy imitating him~~. I think it was a good call for Jerry Lewis to sit on this movie for as long as he did.
