The Day the Clown Cried, the infamous unreleased Jerry Lewis movie that sat in a vault for decades, was donated to the Library of Congress in 2015 on the condition that it not be made public for another 10 years. For those who are unaware, Jerry Lewis plays a clown who's thrown into Auschwitz for mocking Hitler in a drunken stupor. While in prison, he performs his act for the children on the other side of a fence, and this leads the prison guards to enlist him to entertain children who were headed for "deportation". Yes, it gets worse.

The entire plot synopsis has been known for years, but I'll leave it there because there's a chance that we'll all get to see it in 2025.

Can you believe it? In 5 years, one of the most infamous cases of lost media might be made available to the public.

He donated it to the Library of Congress. They'll probably back it up and make it available for people to watch, as libraries do.

My understanding is that Jerry Lewis thought it was a good idea at the time, but they ran out of funding just as they were wrapping up pre-production. Jerry Lewis paid for the reels and kept them locked in a vault, and he would periodically show the film to a handful of people.

As time went on, he began to regret it more and more - there's unproven discourse that Jerry Lewis put the 10 year restriction on The Day the Clown Cries to make it less likely that he would be alive when it was released to the public. That's just ghoulish speculation though.

The year after is Lewis's centenary, so it'd be pretty amazing if the movie got a home media release as part of a "Complete Jerry Lewis: The Centenary Collection" sort of thing.

Not really, he hasn't really been a big name actor for decades. His heyday was long before most of the people on this website were born.

Perhaps you are confusing it with the leaked copy? I know there was a leak copy circulating the Internet a few years ago, but it was only about 10-20 minutes long and was off screen footage if I recall.

The Wikipedia page cites a NYTs article where the LoC curator says they don't have the complete print of the film.

Anyone with even a passing familiarity with Jerry Lewis' act should be able to see why this movie was not a good idea, and comparing it to Life is Beautiful is a bit silly because that movie was not a comedy. Still, as a relic of forgotten media I'd sure like to see some of it

It supposedly is not a good movie. However, it can be seen as something people want to watch because of the context surrounding the film (the uncomfortableness of the premises, the infamy behind the movie, and the mystique of it being a lost/well guarded film)

They are only storing copies of the film in one location apparently. That means there is a very high chacne of this becoming a lost film never actually viewed by people in the 2100s.

Jerry was on drugs at the time he thought of this great idea of a clown tricking kids into ovens. The film ends with the clowns death.

It might be a bit weird but most likely very understandable. People can understand silent films no problem from 100 years ago. It is even possible to go back 500 years and have a fair understanding of late Middle English with no training.

You know those episodes of Animaniacs where they'd have the crazy Director character who switch between super-serious and 'Oy! Why the little puppy children make boom-booms on my head?' at the drop of a hat? That character was a parody of Lewis.

Now if you're gonna tell me you don't know Animaniacs, then...

He was the king of comedy back in the days.
DC made 124 comics about him.
Professor Frink in the Simpsons is based on one of his roles.
Remember that The Nutty Professor movie with Eddie Murphy? It was a remake of Lewis movie with the same name.

Oh yeah, totally. My year 12 teacher said that Holocaust survivors don't like The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Life is Beautiful because it trivialises what they went through and makes a mockery of it, or in Striped Pyjamas' case, asks you to sympathise with Nazis when their son is gassed and burnt instead of the Jewish boy imitating him.

I think it was a good call for Jerry Lewis to sit on this movie for as long as he did. He wanted to release it at some point, but eventually it became an old shame.
