Curious about this one here. I will also admit that I have a bit of interest in the series because it cribs from crime flicks and gritty urban dramas I like a lot, and the idea of a wide open sandbox you can mess around in sounds fairly appealing even if it's not necessarily my preferred type of game.

San Andreas is still the best GTA

Vice City and San Andreas both rank higher for me, but a lot of that is nostalgia. I went back and played them both recently and they're still 10/10 games, but GTAV is just objectively more fun to play than both of them. It's a very close third and over time I could see it ranking higher.

What I'm not a fan of is the medal ranking system that game introduced and then red dead redemption 2 had the same thing

Made it feel like I had to accomplish missions in specific ways instead of any way that I wanted

Probably stick it in the middle somewhere. It's a massive improvement over the trash that was GTA4 though.

I would put V as the best. It's one of the most impressive games I've ever played.

Trash tier, it's an inferior version of SA.
SA > VC > 3 > 4 = 5

Yeah I heard GTAV's gameplay is generally, maybe even nearly unanimously considered to be better, but that GTA fans tend to have other quibbles with it.

Vice City and San Andreas interest me more TBH. I already own San Andreas and V because my brother plays them.

Play SA, it has a lot more to do in the world it's basically a WRPG with how much the game let's you customize the mc(GTAV removed this). It has more buildings to interact with as well unlike GTAV where it's clear they're just window dressing. The world in general is lifeless and boring.

Vice City has a great soundtrack but is unplayable aside from that. The driving is ass, the shooting is ass, the flying is ass...especially compared to V where driving feels smooth, although the gunplay takes some getting used to as well.

I've only played a bit of SA so I can't say much about it, but I feel like you will need to be into 90s gangsta-culture to really get into the game. V's multiple protagonists give you a bit of everything. I love V a lot, it's the first GTA I ever really played and it was some of the most fun I've ever had with a game, I couldn't put it down.

Mechanically, GTAV is definitely the best the series has been. I mean the PS2 games don't even have over-the-shoulder aiming ffs. It's definitely the best as far as sight-seeing goes as well. But these are improvements that kind of happen naturally as tech gets better.

Story and theme wise is a different story, and largely depends on what you want. Vice City evokes the 80s, San Andrea's cribs a lot from the 90s and black crime films of the era, GTAIV is probably the closest to shit like the Godfather in terms of plot if not setting.

GTAV is kinda its own animal and the most modern the series has been in terms of plot and setting.

I'd say it's second to San Andreas overall but it could also be the nostalgia talking and the huge influence that game had over me in general.

However, GTA5 is one of the most impressive games I've ever played. I play it all the time and could probably count the amount of glitches or bugs I've seen on one hand. It's just crazy-polished. It also strikes a great balance between realism and wacky GTA goof-off crap, and I think that makes the game even more fun and that much more hilarious too. I really enjoyed the story and beat it twice, which is extremely rare for what is such a long game for me.

i'm not a superfan of the series, but i've played all 5 numbered games. 5 felt objectively the best to me in terms of story and gameplay- driving, shooting, pretty much everything.

i loved the 3 characters mechanic. if you didn't connect with one, you could primarily play as the others. trevor felt a little 2edgy4me, but he was an honest rendition of the previous protagonists' sociopathic tendencies. 4 had a sort of compelling story, except whenever you started feeling for Niko he'd go and shoot everyone at the bank with no remorse

it's been a while ago. i don't remember the open world feeling empty, but maybe it was.

I find this extremely hard to believe lol. I've only played the game maybe 15 hours and it would take many hands to count all the glitches my friends and I have come across lmao.

GTA is just one of those series that i don't think really has that rigid of a consensus, mostly depends on whether you have a fondness for the PS2 era games, or the modern games. Mostly would probably put V over IV in terms of the modern games, but IV still has its defenders, especially when you account in its AMAZING DLC campaings which V eschewed for the pay-to-win, but socially rewarding Online mode.

San Andreas is probably the best game when taken as it was, although it's held back these days by how dated it is. GTAV makes a lot of missteps, but overall is a solid game that benefits from the refinements in gameplay and design the series gained up to that point, if lacking a bit in structure.

GTA Online is hot garbage though. Unless you're messing about with a group of friends then it's amazing. ...until some dumbass makes the decision to start up a heist and all the goodwill goes right back out the window.
