Quick recap: I've been playing Mega Man X Legacy Collection lately. I played through the first three games for the first time ever, and I've been having a lot of fun.

My rating so far is:

X > X2 > X3

X holds up. It's a timeless game, especially today with our burgeoning indie scene - with all the retraux releases and 16 bit callback games we've been living with for the past decade, X feels like it could have come out yesterday. It still handles so well, the dashing feels so good and the charge shot is sublime. It's an excellent evolution of the Mega Man formula, it looks and sounds great, and there are elements of polish that not even its sequels have managed to hit yet - stage modifications, boss damage like Flame Mammoth with Boomer Kuwanger's weapon - and the final boss rush isn't confined to a room of shitty teleporters, so it feels like you're storming Sigma's base and taking down the riff raff to get to him. I'm usually wary as hell when it comes to those games that internet nerds slob all over - don't care about Ocarina of Time, I can barely scratch the surface of FF6 because the way that its most ardent fans deep-throat it in casual conversation has built an impossibly high standard that I just can't get past, etc. But Mega Man X? This shit holds the fuck up. I 100% buy into the hype - Mega Man X is a masterpiece.

X2 is like an easier, scaled back X. That, or I just breezed through it since I started it so soon after I beat the first game. I love Morph Moth, both the multi-stage fight and their design - so pretty omg - but the whole Zero body parts thing and the three minibosses felt a bit cluttered after X's streamlined feeling. I didn't dislike X2, and I thought the Ostrich stage's heart tank was very satisfying to get - there are a few really standout moments like that. Honestly I just really fucking love the robot masters in this game, they can be annoying to fight but they all look so good and I love them. But yeah - awesome Mega Man game, it's just that X is such a hard act to follow.

I didn't like X3. The difficulty seemed to spike after the first two games, but not in that "I fucked up, I want to play more of the game so I can be better" sort of way. A lot of it felt like bullshit. The enemies hit harder, the levels occasionally feel like they're designed to punish you for no real reason, and it continued X2's perchant for shitty minibosses. Bit was the one boss in this game that I had fun memorising, it was a pain in the ass but I took him down solo - and I liked that. But Byte was a massive piece of shit, and I hate the multiple boss doors per level. It segments the levels too much. Vile, while kinda easy, was a fun callback to X1 and I thoroughly enjoyed fighting him - but the final boss of this game has the most bullshit hitbox, and it's overdesigned to the point of parody. I've heard that X6 is what really separates the wheat from the chaff, but for now, X3 is my least favorite game. I don't mind a difficult game, but there's a line between difficulty and bullshit. X3 felt like bullshit more often than not.

So now I'm starting X4. Apparently the main team worked on this, while a B team worked on X3. I've got moderately high hopes for X4, and I'm looking forward to talking about it as I go.

Dub aside, it is one of, if not the, best MMX game.

Zero is a lot of fun to play as.

X4 has my absolute least favorite armor upgrades, in terms of design. And the sound effects take a dive, too. His charge shots, dash, pretty much everything sounds less satisfying than their SNES counterparts. And the buster upgrade does this thing thats a pain on the ears.

But those nitpicks aside, its probably one of the best games in the franchise. You should love it.

...except for the sting ray level, maybe.

As soon as I saw the girl on the banner for this game, I fucking knew it was gonna be the meme one. It's pretty funny watching this anime opening that focuses on her, being this ray of sunshine for her older brother, because I knew from the second the FMV started that she'd be dead by the end of the game.

The voice acting in this game so far lives up to its reputation. It's not as bad as that one famous line, but the Repliforce commander sounds bored as fuck, Sigma sounds like a sniveling little rat - there's no way that's not Sigma in the opening cutscene, with his eye marks and shit - and Aile's brother is voiced pretty badly by an Australian voice actor.

I'm loving the big, chunky sprites. The fonts and the resolution really dates this game, but X feels good to control. There's a touch of wonkiness to the dash, like you don't retain momentum if you dash off a cliff - but so far the game plays perfectly fine.

Obviously the X games need to change and evolve with the times, but I'm a little torn on the art. I think it might be necessary, but X1, 2 and 3 all had really clean looking art for everything. It's a bit jarring seeing so much detail now.

I love the cutscenes so much for their wonky voice acting. No-one sounds like they should, and they're hamming it up so much.

So far? I'm enjoying it well enough. I'm not gonna compare it to X, because at this point I think that's just in its own league - but this definitely feels like a Mega Man X game, just a touch more than X3 imo.

First boss I fought was Flame Dragoon. He beat my ass, so I'm picking a new stage lmao

MMX4 was my first Megaman game, and it really is a great game. Make sure you go back and play the game as Zero as well! The game is equally fun as both characters. Except for the last boss. He's way more annoying as Zero. When you play the game as Zero what basically happens is that the levels become easier, and the bosses become harder.

Of the first 4 games MMX2 is my least favorite. The bosses seemed less inspiring to me for some reason, and I never liked the one level they make you replay a few times.

I don't watch JoJo stuff, but I've seen enough of JJBA to say that the lion boss on the train looks like a JoJo character lmao. I played him a few times, started learning the patterns, but I got sick of it after a while so now I'm trying Cyber Peacock.

So far, I can see the building blocks of the GBA games being set up. Mega Man Zero does the whole WARNING thing, and Cyber Peacock's stage implements a color scheme and a bunch of hexagonal pathways that are giving me mad Mega Man Battle Network vibes. The Zero thing is probably just a continuation of the X games, but the MMBN elements are a welcome surprise.

Question - is the wall dash still in this game? I feel like I pulled it off like three times in the Cyber Peacock boss fight, but I tried to replicate it afterwards and I can't do it.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I think wall dash works better in 4-6 if you're holding the button the whole time you're on the wall, whereas in 1-3 you had to time it. I'm not sure though, so test it.

Do you plan to play as Zero after you finish with X? I said in the last topic that if you're doing only one playthrough it should be Zero.

Yeah, I gave it a go just now. It works. This is so annoying, I'm used to how it used to be and this just feels so clunky to me - but maybe I'll be able to adapt.

And yeah, I'm gonna play as Zero at the end. There's a whole other campaign with a whole new set of cutscenes, of course I'm gonna play as Zero!

After I finish 4, I'm gonna go and replay the first game. I feel like I'm complaining a lot, and if I'm gonna sing the first game's praises, I need to recontextualise it in the wake of the games I've played since. Granted, I only finished X1 like a month ago for the first time, but for all I know I got really shit at Mega Man and now I'm just being a scrub.

I taught myself to consistently do Magma Dragoon first for efficiency reasons (it especially helps if you know how to take the Ride Armor into the fight), but I'm pretty sure I remember Frost Walrus being the easiest first boss? He's pretty big and slow, and his attacks are easier to avoid from what I recall. But again, I'm used to doing Magma Dragoon first so take that with a grain of salt.

Make sure you go back to Cyber Peacock's stage at some point to S rank all the challenges, that's how you get the upgrades for that stage. X's helmet upgrade is especially broken in this game.

I nearly got Cyber Peacock's health down to nothing. Fuckin homing feather attack, what a crock of shit.

I'm actually enjoying X4 a lot. Even Cyber Peacock with those fucking feather missiles. I feel like I'm getting something out of each stage and fight again, like even when I fuck up, I'm getting closer and closer to a breakthrough. I'm right on the cusp of beating Cyber Peacock, and now I know how to wall jump I should stand a better chance against its feather missiles. I should even be able to knock out the Lion guy tomorrow.

I understand that there are folks who really enjoy 3, but I just don't get it. 4, on the other hand, is a lot of fun right now - even as the bosses are beating my ass, I'm having a good time.

Also, I'm really enjoying those little descriptive blurbs on each boss's splash screen. They're goofy, and they clutter the design, but for some reason I just love them.
