I really liked E1-3 and didn't care that much for E1-4, but I know I'm in the minority there.

This is definitely the weakest game. AA4 at least has lots of memorable stupid things, MASON, and Trucy.

AA3 > AA1 > AA2 > AAI

I may have overranked it, but it's definitely the best in the game.

E1-5 has enough going for it for me to rank the game above AA4 - the Shih-na twist is great and then following that up with Lang accusing Franziska to trick Alba is awesome. There's a lot of really solid humor in that case too in general. It drags on a little bit at the end though.

Those are like the only good things in the game, though. I saw every twist and villain coming from a mile away, even though the Shih-na twist was still fun in the end, to the point where I was just like get on with it already. Especially at the end when Ambsassador McEvil just won't go down.

I thought E-2 had a good final confrontation with good twists.

Also, it's now time for you to get on with AAI2! It wouldn't be inaccurate to say that EVERY case in AAI2 is better than EVERY case in AAI1.

Yeah, it's crazy how much better AAI2 is.

Alba's unwillingness to just fucking give up is notorious in the fandom as a massive waste of time and energy.

And yes, agreed on that previous statement. The worst case in AAI2 (the opener) is imo the best opening case in the series, even better than 4-1, and even better than the best case in AAI1.

I'll get to AAI2 at some point, but not soon. Maybe before the end of summer. Being better than AAI1 wouldn't be much of a feat, though.

I think E2-2 is worse than a couple of cases from the first game (it just drags on way too long), but in general, it's a way better game. The first game is the prototype and the second game is the finished product.

I should say that I didn't like the setup of the game as much as the setup in a courtroom. You don't even feel like a lawyer at all, you just feel like a detective who talks a lot.

I do think splitting up the game between investigations and court segments is better, although I also do think that AAI2 is (usually) paced better as well and just has more interesting encounters.

I felt the exact same way after the first game. The second game is just flat out better.

it's actually shocking how much better AAI2 is, I wasn't even upset that it didn't make it outside of japan because of how mediocre the first game was but it like legit holds up against all odds. it's weird

I will say that AAI2 actually felt like Edgeworth's game, like it was something that only works because it's him. It's hard to explain without spoilers, but I feel like the first game was just putting Edgeworth in wacky situations and just making him a Phoenix substitute. That's not the case with the second game.

Also, I just realized there was no consequence of presenting the illegal evidence. Alba still reacts to it and its unusability in court is never brought up again.

Yeah, that was unfortunate. The game played up this "trump card" as if it was some make or break dilemma for Edgeworth, and it really did amount to nothing.

You can play the Layton game whenever. I think it's worth playing, even if you've never played a Layton game before. It's better than AJ and AAI1, at least.

I was skeptical of the 3D at first but found it to be just as good as the old sprites, plus it lets them do some really weird stuff with some characters' animations

Personally I liked it. He was exactly what I wanted in a "final boss", someone who had power and wasn't afraid to drag everything out until the very end. The only thing I disliked is how the peanut gallery of Larry and Wendy were needed to strike him with unlucky shots at just the perfect time.

Contrast it to the final encounter of AAI2, which is lacking, very short, and extremely easy. Half the time you need to present evidence, all you need to do is present the exact same piece of evidence. AAI2 is still a great game with a good twist in that regard, but I might take any endgame encounter bar AJ in the series over that one.

The final encounter in E2-4 though? Good stuff. Very good stuff.

Honestly AAI2's final case (Even with the little thief section being too long) would rank among my top cases if Simon didn't go down so easily and it was more like the end of the first game.
