Argument in favor: It's based on Mew, which is based on a cat given its name and design

Argument against: Mew might not be a cat because its Japanese name is written in katagana which "indicates that it's phonetic but not borrowed from English. It would be written in hiragana if they meant to imply Mew's name was foreign in nature," and Mew is the origin of all other pokemon, most of which aren't cats, so it can't be a cat, but even if Mew is based on a cat, Mewtwo is a genetic human creation that isn't any more a cat than a robot cat would be

this whole section is both wrong and irrelevant

Loan words (ie. English) are in katakana, hiragana is for Japanese. But also... creative names in general are usually written in katakana anyways unless they involve getting super creative with furigana (mostly for like anime signature moves)

so like

a) loan words -> katana
b) every pokemon uses katakana

...the robot part doesn't follow here. so first there's game vs. anime lore on this; in the games Mew gives birth to Mewtwo. in the anime, Mewtwo's a clone but a clone of a cat is still a cat, just as a clone of a sheep is still a sheep. that's one of the the ethical arguments about cloning, the re-creation of another living being.

he's obviously a cat. by design, lore, and science.
