The winning ticket has finally be bought by some lucky bastard in South Carolina as they are now 1.2 BILLION richer...or rather over 900 MILLION which is still a lot of money in the record breaking jackpot that has a 1 in 302 million chance of winning

Had no one won, it would have reached 2 BILLION on Friday's next draw.

In short, no. Gambling is about expected value and when the math is done a $2 ticket is worth the value of the jackpot even at the impossible odds that come with it.

As we wrote when the jackpot was a mere $970 million last week, you can do the math by multiplying the size of the winnings (very large) by the probability of you winning (very low) to get the value of your ticket. For this new $1.6 billion jackpot, ignoring tax implications, the value of a ticket comes out to be $5.53a very good deal.

I bought two tickets for last friday and two tickets for last night. I didn't win anything on friday. One of my tickets this time won $4.
