Playing 0, my first Yakuza game. I feel like I've missed out on a lot.

But maybe not since they're remaking the old ones so I can just go to Kiwami 1 and 2?

Pretty excited that there are a bunch of these games still for me to get to.

But seriously, welcome to the fandom! Yakuza is so damn good that I was legit mind blown that it flew under my radar for such a long time. Continuing on to Kiwami 1 and 2 after this is probably fine, though you might feel a bit odd going back to the older games afterward. (3-5 aren't being remade, they're just being remastered with higher resolution and 60 fps, which tbh is all they really need.)

Pretty much this exactly. I feel like I typically have a pretty good pulse on "good Japanese games" but I just never really heard of Yakuza until uh 5 I think?

I just started the series with Kiwami like a month ago and loved it so much I immediately preordered Kiwami 2

and now I'm playing Kiwami 2 and it is also extremely good. I just beat up a bunch of yakuza dudes in diapers.

I am a bit concerned that it will start to get repetitive if I keep going with the series too soon, though.
Already in Kiwami 2 I'm getting that feeling a bit from running around the exact same city as the last game. If I jumped into 0 or 3 right away after this one I might really get bored of Kamurocho.

Kamurocho is one of my favorite locales in video game history and playing every game feels like coming home... but with that said you really, really, REALLY should take breaks between playing Yakuza games. The fact that every game builds on the prior ones is IMO one of the series' greatest strengths but it also makes it incredibly easy to burn out on them if you don't palate cleanse with at least one other game between them.

Yeah no joke the Yakuza series has had literally every genre of gameplay in it at some point, lol.

The core gameplay is a story-driven beat-em-up, but that honestly doesn't do anything to convey what the game is actually like. Each game has an absolute glut of side content including tons of side quests and minigames that run the gamut from karaoke and bowling to competitive snowball fighting and pocket circuit racing. Like if I listed out all of the crazy shit that Yakuza games have you do at some point you'd probably be calling bullshit on a number of ones I'd be completely serious about. XD

Yakuza 0 has the best story in any game ever. The ending is so incredibly well done.

I have really slowly been playing them over the past few years. I'm making my way through 3 now, trying to do pretty much all the content.

(I already own every game that has been localized besides dead souls...)

It makes me sad thinking about how by the time everyone gets to the best one, Yakuza 3, they're going to be burnt out/spoiled on the new stuff they added to 0/Kiwami :(

I mean I played it 3rd after the PS2 games so it was graphically and mechanically the best one for that point but the story was just not that great

But 3 is the worst game in the series. Seems pretty widely acknowledged as well from what i've seen online.

3 felt good to play after the terrible loading times of the PS2 games.

But 4 and 5 really upped the gameplay and story quality.

Only real downside to the growing popularity of the games, was how they seemed to rely more and more on celebrities. Those characters often don't feel as strongly written as originals.

6 was a weird thing to play. Gameplay felt really good, some tweaks are needed yeah, but the fatal flaw here was the story. Maybe the weakest one since 3.

Good thing Kiwami 2 is now a thing though, the Y6 gameplay mixed with a plot as strong as 0s is a winning combination.

I havent played 5 or 6, but I liked the story from 3 way more than 2 and 4.

4 has four playable characters, IIRC, and I had a hard time caring about more than two (I cant remember anything about the Cop or Jail guy except their fighting styles)

Be interesting to see where they take the series going forward. I'm not liking the look of the new protag from what i've seen so far. Although that was literally a few seconds in that teaser trailer.
