neither side is going away. instead of furthering the partisan divide we need to work together to understand each other's viewpoints and understand that "compromise" is not a dirty word. it's a sign of maturity.

perhaps i should have said "coexist with more respect for each other" because the growing partisan divide in this country is absolutely counter-productive. this mentality of "as long as the other side is losing i dont care what happens" is utterly toxic. politics were not this bad 20 years ago. it's been getting progressively more and more partisan since i started paying attention.

Make debate a mandatory high school course. Most people don't even know what an axiom is, let alone how to form a coherent defense of their own beliefs. When you don't know how to actually defend the things you say, you have no choice but to call the other person names, because humans are stubborn and calling your opponent a monster is easier than admitting your opinion isn't well thought out.

a significant reason why the right fights climate change is because they originally viewed it as a "liberal" thing and, thus, it must be rivaled. a prominent Congressman was caught even saying something like "I just know that Al Gore supports it so I'm against it".

consider that their side does have some merits to their points. over-regulation is a bad thing. checks and balances are key.

Trying to compromise is how we got Trump to begin with, Obama and crew went to the republicans and they flat out said they'd be destroying them if they dared to go public with their concerns about Trump, hell compromise is how we got that shitty obamacare bill, how the republicans got a hard right supreme court justice and how they gained control of the house by causing a government shutdown and blaming it on Obama like Trump plans on doing in September. Compromise doesn't mean dick when the person you try to compromise with just wants to stab you in the back and put the knife in your hand after putting ketchup on their own back.

Tea Party:
A wave of crazy Republicans elected to office in 2010 that turned the party into the Party of No.

Trump leading the Birther Movement:
Our current President lead a national campaign to refuse the legitimacy of Obamas Presidency. Based on his funny name, the color of his skin, and being from the exotic foreign land of Hawaii. Trump took a page from the Nazis by asking You papers please. It got so bad that many Republicans in Congress (especially the House) started to get on board and the rest of them refused to condemn the movement.

Republican Convention:
A stadium full of deplorables. All the representatives of their party shouting to imprison the political opponent. Something straight out of a 3rd world country.

The Republican leader & representative:
Trump is not an outlier of the Republican Party. His ilk hijacked the party in 2010 and now they are the Party.

Actually it's because fossil fuel companies recognize the unsustainability of their business model and conducted a well-funded, decades-long campaign to seed doubt in the minds of the public and, more importantly, the people who have power.

You can see this in the large gaps of opinion that still exist between Republican voters and donors on the issue:
https://www.motherjones.com/environment/2015/12/republican-donors-climate-change/

It's not about blind opposition to the other; the gaps between Republicans and Democrats on climate change were pretty small until the late 90s
