My doctor suggested I should try gardening because it's very therapeutic and since I have been interested in gardening for some time now, I'm gonna give it a try this time.

One of the reasons why I held off on it before is because gardening looks difficult and complicated. But I'll just go ahead and try it. There are many resources online.

Anyone here do some gardening? Any tips for a complete noob?

Well, it's pretty late in the season, so make sure you do research on what you can plant if you're doing it outdoors. Any bulbs will die in like half a day if you plant them now. But there's still lots and lots of options!

Don't feel like you have to buy seeds and planters and do it all from the start. Go to Lowe's or whatever and read the sunlight and water tags and get what you think looks nice.

If you have pets that will be around your plants, make sure they aren't gonna be poisoned if they eat them.

Yeah, I'd like to plant outdoors. I hadn't thought about the season. You're right.

And thanks for the heads up about pets. I also didn't think about that.

I wanted to try my hand at gardening as well. My interest is to become more self sufficient though.

Do you have anything in mind? Veggies and annuals are a good place to start. Determine if your location is more sun or shade and choose accordingly. Any deer problems in the area? Perennials will come back year after year but they only bloom for a portion of the year. Then trees and shrubs will take a little more digging and planning but once they're established you shouldn't have to worry much.

Seeds are extra work. That's more for the early spring when you want to start things indoors. If your ground is crap then plant in containers. People worry about gardening because they imagine you need to start big.

Grows some peas. That way you can tell your doctor you're giving peas a chance.

Peppers can take a while and like tomatoes they thrive in warmer weather. It's a little too early to think about cool crops though.

Herbs are pretty easy too.

Depending on where you live you can plant some things now that you could harvest still before winter. Snow peas is one example, they can be planted now and grow pea pods by October/November.

When growing strawberries you can buy the plants now at a discount (they don't really bear much fruit the first year they are planted). Also, may be an old wives tale, but supposedly the amount of rainfall/water the plants get in the fall helps determine how much fruit it will bear in the following spring/summer.
