How was it able to garner so much backlash, in a year that saw the releases of films like The Emoji Movie, The Mummy, Transformers 5, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, The Dark Tower, The Book of Henry, Fifty Shades Darker, The Snowman, Geostorm, Justice League, and Baywatch?

Oh, good, there's only one thing you don't understa- Oh it's about reception.

Nobody expected anything out of ANY of those movies.

Except maybe Justice League. If you were dumb.

Everyone expected those movies to suck and none of them had big legacies to live up to (except Pirates and maybe Justice League). Also, most of them weren't as big so their failures couldn't be as big a deal.

The stupid thing is, it's probably because critics had to sit through all those movies that they praised The Last Jedi so heavily compared to the fan reception.

I just re-watched The Last Jedi the other day.
It's still a bad movie.
Even worse with the second watch.

Because half the fans were pissed off that it deviated from the Old EU, and the other half were devastated that it deviated from their fanfic that should OBVIOUSLY be canon and Disney are a bunch of creatively dead hacks who BETRAYED the fanbase by not having Luke and Kylo hook up and reveal that Rey was Yoda's daughter.

The film was fine, 'fandoms' are the worst.

I actually disagree with this somewhat. I think certain movies aren't "in their time", where they would see the biggest amount of success, while other movies aren't particularly exceptional but were released at the right time. That doesn't mean it needed to be swimming in a glut of shit to be good, just that there is a certain sense of timing involved in the release of movies on a small scale (the standard release schedule) and a larger scale (is society going to be receptive to this movie in this moment). Avatar is a fantastic example of being released at the right time. Solo is a great example of being released at the wrong time.

Disagree, I am not apart of the fandoms and thought it was bad.

Perhaps it's almost as if the most-acclaimed films of last year just felt like diamonds in the rough to critics and they were over-praised as a result? Worth noting that not only so-called professional critics, but also YouTube "critics" who see a lot of recent movies loved The Last Jedi, e.g. Chris Stuckmann, Bob Chipman, Smeghead.

Also I found a "worst movies of 2017" thread somewhere and just about every list had critically-acclaimed films in it. The Last Jedi was not much more frequently mentioned than Wonder Woman and Dunkirk! Worth noting that Alien: Covenant was a *very* popular choice, which I can hardly fault them for. There were even mentions of Get Out and Logan! Looks like no film released last year is a sacred cow, but then again I guess that's what happens when the most acclaimed film of the year is a horror film about a black man in white suburbia.

The Last Jedi was the best Star Wars movie, so I don't get the hate. Especially from the frankly awful fanbase.

Was it a perfect movie? No. But you're watching the wrong series if that's what you're expecting.

Imagine thinking Rey being Yoda's daughter wouldn't be the greatest thing ever.
