The 2004 version.

It was good, but like, I don't know. I think I need to see/hear a recording of the actual musical to get a better perspective on it. There's a lot of little things that threw me off. Like the framing device was bad. I don't know why Christine or Raoul would care about that monkey. Is the Phantom actually a wizard? Why is his underground living space this giant gilded complex? My favorite character may have somehow been Carlotta

You should really watch the Lon Chaney classic next.

So, if you actually want to delve deeper into Phantom, read the original book and listen to the original London cast (Brightman/Crawford)

The music is a step up IMO and the book actually tells the story. Or just be done, that's totally fine too.

Yeah, the movie is a guilty pleasure, but it's really mediocre compared to seeing a strong live-action version, just like any musical.

The Phantom kind of reminds me of Kylo Ren. He's like the coolest 40-something loser who lives in a basement who thinks he should get the girl because he's been such a nice guy to her

So is The Phantoms play supposed to be not that good? Its just an elaborate excuse to get himself and Christine on stage together right?

I think it really is supposed to be that good. Phantom is a glory hound and brilliant musician. He wants the audience to be mesmerized before he does his final reveal.

The weird framing device comes from the musical. The movie is pretty faithful to it.

Carlotta is definitely great.

And yeah, it's worth listening to Broadway cast recordings.

Hmm Im still unsure about overall rankings but Phantom of the Opera is definitely my favorite song. Masquerade would be pretty high up too

OK so Christine has talked about the Angel of Music from a young age, its why Raoul knows about it and thinks it was a childhood fantasy. Was that always Erik, as in was he in contact with her since she was a child? Or it was just a weird fantasy that Erik took advantage of and claimed to be?

So I haven't seen it or anything, but I know some details about Love Never Dies, and it sounds BAD. Like, Christine cheats on Raoul with the Phantom on THEIR WEDDING NIGHT? And then the Phantom goes on to start a carnival??? It sounds like bad fanfiction

My sister hated Love Never Dies. She's a big fan of Broadway musicals (having invested considerable time and effort in community theater), so she'd be a better judge of these things than I am. She said that there was one scene that was so bad she was saying out loud, "Really?!"

She liked the kid in the show, though, that was one high point for her.

Devil Take the Hindmost, original and quartet versions are great and The Beauty Underneath is a solid track and after that I have nothing good to say about Love Never Dies from a creative, storytelling, musical, or indeed any other perspective.

I had the unfortunate experience of someone getting me tickets for Love Never Dies a month or so ago.

Its predictable and boring and bad.
