I never really got why Two Towers was universally thought to be the worst. I'd sooner say 2 > 1 > 3 than the bloated Return of the King being anywhere but a distant #3.

It's been many years since I've seen the movies, I haven't found the patience to sink 12 hours into them again.

I vaguely remember Two Towers being my favorite way back when. Maybe my opinion would be different today, voted for it anyway.

Had no idea it was commonly regarded as the worst one, huh

Looking at this topic you wouldn't guess that. Maybe Two Towers is just the worst among people who tend to talk about the movies a lot. I guess it'd make some sense.

personally i'm not a gollum fan, so the fact that he plays such a huge role in TTT is an issue for me. granted, this is a problem in RoTK too, but RotK has more highs than TTT as far as i'm concerned.

Fellowship

I think I generally prefer the first installments of lengthy series like this because of the world-building and introduction to the characters. It was the only film where the Fellowship adventured together, even if it was for only about an hour of screen time, and in that hour they saw more cool places than in the latter two movies combined (or at least it felt that way). I just adore that stretch of the movie.

Actually somewhere I heard Two Towers was generally considered the best. IIRC it has the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of the trilogy for what it's worth.

All I'm certain of is that I liked Return of the King the least of the trilogy. If I had to pick one I'd go with The Two Towers because the first film is setup, while Two Towers packs the real punch. But it's really close.

It's kind of a testament to how great this trilogy is that the votals are this close.

As a whole it might be my favourite movie franchise of all-time.

Helm's Deep was fun, but I dunno, I might have preferred the Mines of Moria fight due to the tension and emergence of the Balrog. From the moment the party hears a distant drumbeat in the mines to the moment they collapse grieving Gandalf... maybe the best sequence of the trilogy imo.

Yeah Mines of Moria was definitely my favorite "big battle" of the trilogy. The battles in the later films were a bit too much like something out of a Marvel movie at times for my tastes with the Legolas and Gimli banter and stunts. Not that there's anything wrong with Marvel movies but it's not what I want LotR to be doing so much.

Oh man, I'll throw in my support of Helm's Deep as one of the best battle sequences anywhere. The tension in that moment of quiet before the fight is just staggering. There's no mystery, no lurking unnamed threat. It's all out in the open in that moment and it feels like the end of the line for Rowan in such a decisive way.

Since LotR has totally gone the Star Wars route of a disappointing prequel trilogy I can't wait for the JJ Abrams directed sequel.
