The most memorable locations and 'things' you associate with it and no other city? I need this for a story I'm writing. I've got these so far:
Los Angeles (Hollywood, Hollywood Sign, Impossibly Large Freeways)
New York (Super Urban, Many Landmarks)
Las Vegas (the Strip)
Washington DC (Landmarks and Politicians)

Am I missing a fifth city, or does one of these four clearly outdo the others?

Based off your descriptions, you should also consider San Francisco (Bridge, Hills, LGBT Community)

I was also thinking maybe San Francisco for the record.

Not Chicago, but on the other hand I grew up there so I think I automatically have a tendency to view everything there as normal.

San Francisco is a good choice, thanks. I don't know about Chicago, though. I don't really think of it as having any distinctive characteristics or locations besides Lake Michigan.

What does New Orleans have besides Marti Gras?

Yeah the entire French Quarter is not really like anywhere I can think of from other American cities, which is the main reason I say that.

Las Vegas definitely. You can easily describe the various casinos because they all stand out in their own ways.

Your critieria seem very arbitrary but I will try to add a few

Baltimore -- the inner harbor, the old factories, and all the neighborhoods
Miami -- port of miami, cruise ships, virginia key
San Diego -- beaches, balboa park, mission architecture
Seattle - space needle, jazz/rock/grunge history, pike place, puget sound

San Francisco and Vegas are the two for me. One has a unique, ridiculous culture and mythology to it and a ridiculous bunch of hotels/casinos and San Francisco just looks like nowhere else.

The one with the unique ridiculous culture and mythology is San Fransisco, right?

Also add the monorail for Seattle. Other places might have monorails, but none as useless as ours.

LA has a lot of neighborhoods that people will recognize by name even if they haven't been there. Long Beach, Santa Monica, Orange County ("the O.C."), Beverly Hills, Anaheim, Disneyland, Burbank (EDIT: also Hollywood, blanked on that one >_>).

New York also has a lot of neighborhoods that people will recognize without ever having been there.

Visually, San Francisco does look pretty unique, but frankly if you want this for writing, I don't think much of the unique architecture will translate well to the page.

I would encourage you to pick a town you know better, though. (Like...I know LA better than New York, so I'd probably pick LA between the two, personally).

I was already leaning toward the Santa Monica area because I live there, yeah.

I am only saying this because things like this get me.

Long Beach, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Burbank...they are all their own cities separate from LA.
Orange County (and Anaheim) is a completely different county.
