so I took in another cat 2 months ago. It took him about a week, but he learned to use the litter boxes like the other cats. He would pee in random areas and I kept showing him where the box is and eventually he started using it

this past week, hes been pissing everywhere

no matter what I do, he won't go back to the litter box

today he took a piss on the bed while I was still sleeping, just a few feet away from my head. that was the last straw

today I tried kicking him out of the house for a few hours and tried making him go outside. Allegedly he used to be an outside cat but hes had no desire to go out since I've gotten him. So the idea was maybe to get him used to going outside. 1 of my 3 cats is this way. Just goes outside and never in the box

I brought him back inside just now and literally the first thing he does is take a piss on the carpet

I've never had a pet Unlearn something like this. and since it usually doesn't take much training to have a cat use the box to begin with, I have no idea what to do when he stops doing what usually comes naturally

Have you taken him to the vets? We had a similar problem once and it was the younger cat trying to claim dominion over the older one, it took a lot of fucking effort to stop it.

Note: I'm not sure if this actually worked or if the cat just stopped of it's own free will, but I scrubbed any spot it whizzed on to negate the smell/marking of territory and also sprayed the cats back with water each time it did it.

After a couple weeks it stopped.

I haven't yet, but did taking him to the vets stop him from claiming dominion?

It was more to gauge it's age and it was something we also did when it was happening so maybe. Cats are assholes so it's kinda hard to tell.

Edit: Also it was a stray and we weren't sure if it was sick or tagged or something, it'd only been with us a few weeks, similar to your own story. But we always make em outdoor cats, no place to pee in the home.

Normally when a cat is peeing in strange places, it's either a matter of dominance or health. If the cat isn't fighting with your other animals or getting into staredowns, then chances are there's something wrong. My roommate's cat pees in the corners of the basement constantly, but we know he's diabetic and she just can't afford the insulin. Because it's the basement, which is uncarpeted, we just live with it, but under any circumstances I would stage an intervention.

:/ idk why people have pets if they don't have the ability to handle things like this reasonably. It's the reality of pets that inconvenient things will happen like a cat peeing in the wrong spot over and over again. It's a pretty sure sign something is wrong.

not sure if it was the intent but that comes off as insulting and thats kinda uncalled for

Its never happened before. So heres me learning from it.
And then I will know what to do once we get through this.
See?

People learn everything from somewhere first, nobody just KNOWS everything, and I wanted advice. Especially since this behavior is a complete 180 compared to what hes BEEN doing for awhile now. Ya know?

It was indeed the reality of him going in unfavorable spots, But I SAID that. He didn't just know to go in his new litter box when i got him, and its not like he JUST came to the house, hes been here for months. I've danced this dance with at least other 5 cats

AND clearly implied I worked with him and put up with him as well until he got the hang of it.
Its not like I'm freaking out or something.
OF COURSE hes peed in a bunch of places when I got him >_>

but he STOPPED doing that and in at least my experience, thats not normal. Hes going backwards. Just wanted to know if anyone knew what was going on, or at least had a similar experience, as I work towards taking him in. I know there might be a bunch of different things and every cat is not the same, but I just wanted to hear it.

thats all

just wanted to talk about it. Is that REALLY a problem?
Not entirely sure whats unreasonable about this

its a learning process and cats are sometimes unpredictable.
plus whats wrong with wanting to talk about Cats?

but anyways, I'm just dealing with it until Tomorrow when I actually take him to the vet. I Have an appointment and everything. Which was the problem to begin with, everywhere was booked. Is it Flu season for cats or something? lulz

He HAS started going back to his litter box but still goes (Or at least TRIES, if I'm around) other places too. so the problem is still there

but Tomorrow is the day

Cat care elitists are the worst people

actually it reminded me of something that happened earlier this year. I got some of my wisdom teeth removed and was ..HOPEFULLY understandably nervous about the whole thing. I never had teeth removed! I also was paranoid about dry sockets and shit. So I made a topic on b8 asking advice and asking for people to share their experiences.

Unlike the dentists and MD places online where they made it sound like you WILL get dry sockets, I was assured its a rare thing by b8 and only one b8er actually got it out of all of the people that posted. I think it was chaostony.

Then tabii showed up and scolded me on not just calling a dentist, and also coming to b8 for "professional" help. and maybe even insinuated that I couldn't read or something.

but All I wanted to do was share experiences among my (online) peers is all. It wasn't for anything urgent. I just wanted to talk with yall!

So yea, not chalking it as an elitist cat thing, which ARE the worst. Maybe just a tabii thing and her hating people talking. So maybe its not that bad, lopen

You could try getting more litter boxes. Sometimes that helps if you have multiple cats.

Like I moved one of the litter boxes outside to clean it for one day and one of the cats decided to shit on the floor instead of use the other litter box despite it being literally 2 foot away from where he shit

I've met a few cat people like this.

I'm not saying all cat or even most owners are like that or anything. I mean I'm a cat person and have had cats for years (though I can't actually provide any better input than has already been provided in the topic).

It's really just a grating vocal minority but yeah it feels like of all the pets cat enthusiasts tend to have the most people who seem more interested in trying to tear other cat owners down than be helpful or understanding.

Though that dentist story is rough. Maybe just a coincidence in this case. Or maybe if I interacted with more dog or bird owners they'd all level their elitism up a bit. ... though I feel like I've interacted with the most dog owners of all so...

I'd take the cat to the vet, that way they can rule out a medical cause. We ran into something similar with one of mine where she would spray on the walls. It turned out to be behavioral in her case (basically her rebelling against my lack of free time after having kids and not spending enough time with her, talk about high maintenance).

There's an awesome product called Nature's Miracle Urine Destroyer that does something to the enzymes and gets rid of the smell (as long as it hasn't been cleaned with another product first). Sometimes you have to really soak it if the urine got down in the the carpet padding through. Good luck!
