I mean these videos when a guy is watching a trailer or something and we get to see his reaction while he watches said trailer.

How did this even get popular on YouTube in the first place?

I should also make a "react" video for myself.

I would watch a trailer for a new game or whatever, and have it record a blank look on my face, where I say nothing, and do nothing, and upload that.

At least that wouldn't be as obnoxious to watch. I hate when people scream or overreact in YouTube videos in general.

Now I wonder if there is a video like that somewhere on YouTube.

This is the correct answer. It's not only nice to share a social experience with someone, or watch an entertaining personality's reaction to something. But it's also cool to see different perspectives on things. I feel like things like watching "old people" react to "young people" things is the easiest example.

I always thought the genre evolved from the videos showing people "2 girls, 1 cup" and other shock videos, though. Remember when that was a thing?

People make them because people watch them and people watch them because somehow the reactions -- usually exaggerated -- entertain them.

As noted, there's a certain social element to it. I imagine it's partly due to an increased disconnect among individuals, where most people don't have the sense of camaraderie they once did and they're trying to replace shared experiences with real friends with digital ones.

Personally, I think react videos are fucking stupid. However, at the same time, I'll occasionally watch caustic reviewers -- like the Nostalgia Critic -- who embody many of the traits eventually led to the rise of reaction videos (eg comically overreactions to things).

idk, in the case of split-screens with entire episodes of tv shows, piracy certainly seems a motive in some cases and I'm not entirely sure how legal the practice could possibly be given that it could completely decimate copyright laws.

Now that was an appropriate and a genuine reaction to a trailer.

MST3K added something to what they were watching. They also wrote the shows, all of that was scripted even the movie riffing. Reaction videos add nothing and take no effort.

Yeah, but that last thing required them getting big in the first place. It's kind of a given that as soon as something is being seen by a lot of people, marketers and advertisers will try to find a way in there.

While caustic reviewers owe a lot to MST3k, I'm not sure if that's *as* true of react videos which might share more with something like America's funniest home videos. Plus MST3K worked *because* it was scripted and, even then, jokes frequently bombed. Reaction videos have none of that. Reaction videos are often just visceral responses that play into a person's facial features and body language, not the content of their remarks. Plus MST3K was built around mocking awful things, whereas reaction videos can pertain to *anything*
