Certain American dialects of English are apparently closer to the English of the 1700s than any dialect of British English, though, so you're moving away from purity quicker than we are.

This, tbh. The Brits forgot how to speak the language. (Granted, they're not the same Brits who ever spoke that language. Honestly, a better comparison is two brothers where one brother (America) decides to move out and get their own place while the other brother (UK) lives in their parents' basement then inherits the house and, because they have the house they'd be squatting in instead of becoming independent, they somehow think they have a greater claim on their shared heritage.)

Also I refuse to take seriously any language that spells "defense" with a "c."

As opposed to the language that changed it for one word and then forgot to be consistent in all words derived from and related to it?

On that note I hate how American TV shows represent the British. I mean it's either the posh, London accent or Cockney in most cases. Of course there are some exceptions such as anything with Sean Bean in it.

I don't know why but I have started spelling stuff with "u" some several months ago. Armour, colour, flavour, etc, etc. Why did the U.S. started changing this spelling in the first place?

As for the topic at hand, I do find it funny when folks do say "Speak American". It's obvious majority of the time "American" refers to United States citizens but many seem to forget there's dozens of countries who are part of the Americas. Hell, we're even called United States of America.

This.

Apparently the non-rhotic version of english (dropping the R's off words) became fashionable in the mid 1800's IIRC.

That's why our coastal cities like Boston sound so weird because they'd get weird influences from the guys across the pond. That's also why Australia sounds British (or at least close to it) and American's don't despite having a very short window between when America was settled and Australia was settled.

To be fair, English is technically a bastard stew of German and Latin, which is possibly the most diluted and corrupted language spoken by humans.

So arguing over which version is "purer" is like arguing over which septic tank you would prefer to drink slurry out of.

Imagine how dense you'd have to be to think that. However, all of its derivations and relations DO use "s" instead of "c" so don't be so defensive (and even the British system uses "defensive" instead of "defencive"...) and instead use a little sense for a change.

It didn't "change" it, English was non-standardized for hundreds of years with multiple acceptable variant spellings. However, the Brits decided to favor "ou" instead of just "o" (which is also logically inconsistent, since they don't pronounce it "col-ow-r" like they do for "our" and "flour")

Which is why I stand by the tag I set for you. =p

Keep in mind that even the British system which uses "defence" and "defenceless" still reverts to "defensive" (instead of "defencive"), "defensively" (instead of "defencisely), etc, so they aren't even consistent with the "c" usage.

I have no actual facts to back this up, but it may have something to do with it being cheaper to print those words on a printing press if you can get away with taking a letter out of them.

Both are technically wrong, since the letter is supposed to be "zeta" (or more accurately "zayin", if you want to get even fussier about it).

Every other pronunciation of it has just been a corruption of its original name anyway, so is just as wrong as any other.
