I sit next to the door to a classroom. I put my phone in the front pocket of my backpack, which I put on the floor facing the door. The door was left open because it's super hot in LA. Halfway through the class, I heard a ruffling on my backpack and turned to find the phone gone. I got up, saw a guy jogging away, and yelled "Hey!" Then he looked at me and took off running.

I should have followed him, but the professor asked what was happening, so instead I told her that a guy stole my phone, and I got to spend the second half of the class talking to the campus police instead of learning about hyperbolic function derivatives.

Turns out there are a lot of 5'8" Hispanic guys with black hair and white shirts in LA colleges, however, so the thief got away.

What college?

I went to a university in a high crime rate area and misplaced my phone/wallet on multiple occasions and somehow had it returned every time. But prior to the items being recovered I felt horrible so I can only imagine this situation feels even more shitty

The cops did. They were surprised when the phone was still on, they expected the guy to have turned it off immediately.

I lost my phone once, someone found it and turned it into the campus police.
I lost my phone again and a kid found my sim card, called my dad and arranged a meetup to return it to me.
I lost my wallet...and someone turned it into the local police. Everything was still in the wallet.

It wasn't just me, my roommate lost his wallet and he was contacted to pick it up on campus. Nothing was missing.

I went to fantasy land, just ignore me.

The funny part is that I'd also lost my phone twice at school and both times someone turned it into the administration.

I mean yea there are decent people in the world but it's usually better to just go in guarded because if you get that one time someone isn't so decent then it still sucks more

Unless it's something preinstalled, it wouldn't have worked because I never installed any kind of find my phone ap. It doesn't matter a lot in any case because the service has already been cancelled and my insurance will get me a new phone.

Since people have mentioned losing things at colleges and having them returned: ive actually been on the opposite side. It was the last day of finals my junior year. Was walking to my final from my girlfriends apartment. I see a random wallet just sitting on the ground, scoop it up and keep walking. Take a look inside to see if there was anything identifying in it. There is a student id and drivers license, i recognized the guy as actually being in a few of my classes. Unfortunately not the one i was walking to the final for. Since it was the last day of finals i didnt have time to track the guy down since i would be moving out an hour after finals with family coming to help. I dropped it off with campus police and made sure to point out the guys id was in there. never found out if the guy got it back, but i like to think he did. Actually never mentioned it to anyone before now, not really in my personality to.

Again, if you have android or iphone, you can use the base system to look it up. I've done it many times for our android phones whenever my wife or I lose our phones.

Ah, that's what I get for not having one and assuming.

OK fine then, android you don't need to turn anything on.
