The environments/buildings are very painterly, the characters and some random objects are cel shaded, and some animals (bear, etc) have this hyper cel shading that only uses like 3 colors. There's a place at the lake stable that has all 3 in one place if you want to compare (the lamp casts a baked-in painted light onto the stable counter, but casts a cel shaded dynamic light on the NPC, and the horses nearby have the hyper shading).

I definitely got a ton of Ghibli vibes during the game. Just the first things that immediately come to mind are:

* Lord of the mountain = forest spirit in Princess Mononoke
* The koroks and blupees remind me of critters you might see in a Ghibli movie, like the tiny forest spirits in Princess Mononoke, or the soot gremlins in Totoro and Spirited Away
* The atmosphere of the world has a certain reverence for nature and the wind, reminding me of Mononoke, Totoro, Nausicaa
*Steam-punky giant tank machines and flying machines, juxtaposed with a very empty natural world with little technology, reminds me of Nausicaa, and Castle in the Sky
* I'd be extremely surprised if Joe Hisaishi's Ghibli compositions were not a big inspiration for the music in this game:

- One Summer's Day from Sprited Away sounds identical to the various atmospheric piano music you hear throughout hyrule
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpXnIXP6j78

- The first 30 seconds of the main theme reminds me of the first 30 seconds of a ton of Ghibli songs, for example Path of the Wind, from Totoro, although that's much simpler of a song https://youtu.be/FQx4cEwKD5E?t=29 (main theme here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDHw7EarfOk&list=PLFwObPlg7Y1pnZVEKHOE6QW66XZacCFxY&index=1)

I don't think Breath of the Wild is even the first time a Zelda game has had Miyazaki-inspired elements in it - which isn't really a surprise given that he is a major cultural influence, it would be sort of like saying you're getting a Disney vibe from something

But apparently foolmo disagrees because he's seen a Miyazaki movie before, implying that anyone who disagrees with him hasn't.

I should have clarified that I was talking about the visuals. If you think BOTW looks like a Miyazaki movie then you definitely haven't seen one. Thematically the vibe is there and has always been in Zelda as para explained. I guess it makes me a snob to think visuals are an important part of animated movies and video games.

But the backgrounds aren't detailed and the characters are (and the animals are much less detailed but in the style of the characters). I get what they were going for but they missed the mark. The closest thing they got to a Miyazaki movie was the framerate!

I've enjoyed hundreds if not thousands of games, and almost never complain about the graphics of any game. But apparently if I don't 10/10 LOVEEEE this game's graphics I just don't know how to enjoy things.

Reminds me of how I have played every Zelda multiple times over almost two decades, deeply loved almost every single one of them, but because I don't like BOTW I'm "not a Zelda fan" compared to the dude who only played 30 minutes of OoT at his friend's house in 3rd grade but he after 2 hours of BOTW he thinks it's 10/10 best game ever so he's a true fan.

That's a good example of how ugly the animals are, and the super low detail background.

The grass is great in this game though (but nothing like Miyazaki). I wish they made the whole thing look like that and the characters.

If the vast majority of people who have played the game enjoy it and see it one way.

And you're one of the outliers who sees it negatively...

Then chances are that it has more to do with you than with the game itself.

Generally speaking, his nitpick about the graphic style of the game being "clashing" is very much in the eye of the beholder, and yet it was stated with the assumption that it was an obvious flaw.

And his response to disagreement about the quality is basically to get sarcastic, as if I was somehow asserting that my viewpoint was superior to his just by disagreeing and stating my opinion in return.

(I mean, true, I did call him a snob first, so I'll give him that. No defending it at this point.)

I dunno what it is about critics these days, but you can't disagree with them anymore. They tend to accuse you of hyperbole such as "Oh, so only opinions that agree with yours are okay." I mean, hell, even you're getting in on that.

My point being is that holding a negative opinion and being an outlier about it doesn't mean you have a better viewpoint than everyone else. And behaving like you do is, in fact, insulting to everyone around you. Sometimes, holding the minority opinion simply means you hold the minority opinion.

And you know what? That's okay. You don't like the art style of the game. That's great! Art is subjective. Acting like your opinion is more informed just because it's negative is, on the other hand, not okay.

I don't think he thinks his opinion is more informed because it's negative.

I think he thinks his opinion is more informed because he's literally a game designer who has put massive amounts of time and effort into it studying and understanding it, and therefore puts great value in his views.

But that's probably just crazy talk. He probably just thinks he's right because so many other people think he's wrong.

BotW is a 7/10 game btw, imo. Once the magic wears off, it's flaws become increasingly apparent and irritating.
