Admittedly the stuff that requires you to edit the save data to access would be problematic (thought I read about a patch that altered the nature of it though?) but as for permanently "ruining" your soul... isn't that just a function of Steam? Wasn't it entirely possible to revert if you really wanted to by messing with the save manually?

To make an analogy, (Nier spoilers): It's like if you backed up your saves to external memory before doing Ending D so you could restore your saves after they're erased while preserving the fact that you did Ending D as indicated by the change to the title screen.

Well, it is a part of the game. Technically a downgrade to not have it, although some might disagree on the latter. I'm sure they can force-quit on PS4 and Vita. They can throw an exception if they really need to.

It's not really a matter of it can't possibly be done. It's a matter of violating compliance. Normally they won't let you publish a game on a console that crashes or force quits intentionally.

I don't see them making an exception here. I anticipate an in-game "reset" similar to what happens in some other games with console releases, like (spoiling a couple games with similar concepts at your own risk) Eternal Darkness or Arkham Asylum.

Technically I don't think that's the only thing either. Undertale frequently saves information without any graphical indication. That's an easy fix, but they did it with non-progress information to bury the lead on dialogue, so they might allow an exception there.

So the collector's edition comes with a music box locket.

And I don't care that much about everything else that comes with it, but I kinda want the locket.

Maybe someone will sell one by itself for a reasonable price-- I almost typed that with a straight face.

I really doubt they would let it slide in this case, but Sony and Microsoft have allowed specific games to pass certification despite explicitly and intentionally breaking some rules so there's at least a small chance they'd do it here. For example Braid was allowed to not have a "Press Start" title screen even though that was required under Microsoft's rules at the time.

But crashing to OS is a much bigger deal than that so I really doubt it would be allowed.

Yeah, it's not too surprising that you can get an exception for some rules, but "no crashing" is definitely one of the big ones.

Why not? It's fuckin undertale. They will make the exception.

From personal experience, Sony is pretty open to indies and stuff like this. Pretty much every indie game (and AAA for that matter) releases with lots of compliance exceptions.

Undertale has such a massive following though, they can easily make the exception. Similar to all the exceptions they made for Kojima's PT.

A crash can be for a specific application and does not necessarily mean a full system crash. Not sure why you think that.

Erm, so what's the difference between a command that closes a program and the program crashing, and why is Undertale the latter rather than the former?

First off, a system crash would mean the whole computer/console crashing as opposed to just an application/game, and that's the part I was correcting. If you understand that, then don't worry about it.

Second, vaguely speaking, admittedly it's easier just to call it crashing when it's intentional for compliance purposes since it's not allowed. However, on any modern console, I don't think a game is allowed to force quit without throwing an error, and that would make any form of forced quit a crash.

Third, it's a bit different between an application with user interaction and a process without. The latter may be expected to close without ever be noticed, but a user is going to think something is wrong if it's something like a browser or game that closes for a reason they're not aware of. In other words, while Undertale on PC may not technically crash, it certainly is meant to make you think it does, so generally people still call it crashing.

Like I said, I imagine they'll let them not have an autosave icon. But I'll be incredibly shocked if they let them crash the game. Has there ever been an exception to that on any console?
