For anyone interested, Highway Blossoms in particular was an excellent read

I didn't even know steam had that many visual novels.

As somebody that likes Zero Escape and Phoenix Wright but would not touch anything with dating sim or fanservice stuff, is this worth looking into?

very much so, yes.
root double is the one that should immediately stand out considering it's produced and directed by one of the main guys who wrote Ever17. you know his co-author better: he later on did Zero Escape.

world end economica is the same writer as spice and wolf, pretty safe and pretty great. since it's the complete version you get all three episodes. between this and root double, they got two strong games in $12 that, if you were considering just beating the average, is worth it.

the fault games are safe. part 2 is in the 2nd tier, part 1 is the first one.
narcissu is safe and it's the 10th anniversary remake with the season pass. that's a great one right there.

highway blossoms is a yuri game with an official 18+ patch that's free.
ame no marginal is fine but not as good as narcissu (same writer) so that's why it's in the $1 tier.
first time hearing of sound of drop but seems like it's a horror VN. no nudity but has gore.
memory's dogma is another one i'm hearing about for the first time and seems to be the more generic one on the list.

chiru chiru is weird here because they're spinoffs from Grisaia. but i mean, if you don't have 'em and played the first game, go for it i guess.
japanese school life is the most "why?" of them all.

sunrider liberation basically is part of the sunrider series, of which the first game is free so you can see if you like it. SRPG, mixes up dating sims with a game. been really looking at getting this for a while now so pretty happy that it's here. fanservice is plenty in there. steam version is all ages but there's a free 18+ patch.

if you don't want fanservice, basically avoid nekopara and anything with an 18+ patch. what's leftover is still pretty well worth it - root double, world end economica complete, narcissu, fault 1 and 2, and sound of drop. honestly, even sunrider's in that "worth playing" camp because there's an actual game in there. but again, you can try the free game a bit to see if you like what you're getting. you should play it first anyway. the $1 tier kinda gets your feet wet into it a bit, one of the faults, ame no marginal, a nekopara, and karakara. the BTA tier adds some really good ones and the $12 blows out the $9 one.

It should be noted that Magical Girl ChiruChiru does include some plot spoilers from Grisaia 2 and 3.

It's probably not best to play it before at least playing 2.

But yeah even if you don't like fanservice, this bundle is worth it. It's mostly not stuff I would recommend first to branch out from PW/ZE (that would be stuff like Higurashi/Umineko, F/SN, Devil on the G-String, Clannad, the main Grisaia games, etc) but they're all fairly good and you could definitely do worse. Even the fanservicy stuff is generally pretty high quality in this (If you're looking for something cute, funny, and comfy, Nekopara is pretty up there).

Oh and one of the more serious ones you didn't mention is Sound of Drop, Fall Into Poison, which is pretty good as well.

i mentioned sound of drop briefly, i just don't know it beyond that it's straight up horror.
which is pretty cool, i admit. you've got a couple tearjerkers, a great mystery, a couple great dramas that are very different, what looks like a great horror game, and a great srpg hybrid of "there's optional porn but that ain't why you'll put in 30+ hours."

that's a crazy variety for $12. in terms of time investment, some of those will easily do 30 hours. others will be shorter, 6-8.

I thought Sound of Drop was alright but a lot of lines felt like they'd been translated awkwardly.

I'd also just like to say that, despite having an 18+ patch, Highway Blossoms isn't a mere fanservice game! That patch also added some nice characterization

Anyway, sorry for shilling but I consider VNs to be games and Highway Blossoms is my 15th favorite game ever. I hope it being in this bundle gets it some attention and people don't just treat it as filler

Well I'm relatively new to the genre, maybe it is typical yuri for all I know, but HB had characters I fell on love with and a fun story about them searching for treasure. It wasn't just an excuse plot for fanservice and even the 18+ scenes furthered the characters more than anything

Tbh my recommendation is for anyone interested in VN's on Steam to--at least temporarily--skip the ones in this bundle and play something like Clannad, Steins;Gate, or The House in Fata Morgana instead.

In fairness I will say that from this bundle I have heard mostly good things about Highway Blossoms and World End Economica, but I haven't played either of them myself to confirm.

Also holy shit World End Economica was written by the author of Spice and Wolf why have I not bought this yet.

My only suggestion for people new to visual novels would be to start with a shorter one. See how you even feel about this style of storytelling before taking on some 30+ hour commitment.

Actually I don't know if this is how you meant it, but this is a fair criticism of my recommendations.

Don't know if I have any recommendations that fit this though, since I've pretty much only ever played longer VN's. Hell, Fata Morgana probably IS the shortest one I've read and I think I spent 20-25 hours on that even.

I guess individual chapters of Higurashi and Umineko are somewhat complete-ish stories and are <10 hours in total, so maybe those? I also don't think those are really newbie-friendly though.

in terms of length...

- world end economica is one of the longest. each of the 3 parts is of good length but nothing too crazy. it's also pretty engaging if you like reading, so you'll definitely lose track of time here. combined the hours will add up but at least you'll have a decent place to stop.
- root double is the longest game here and it probably isn't even close. that said if you were into Zero Escape, you shouldn't be surprised by this. same director, producer, and one of the two writers from it.
- both fault games are pretty short but they also aren't amazing. they're a solid intro for some mediocre writing but a lot of nice touches artistically that bring it up.
- narcissu is fairly short and a very strong entry.
- ame no marginal is shorter, not as strong, but at least you won't look at narcissu in comparison.
- highway blossoms seems to be fairly short too it seems.
- seems sound of drop is technically fairly short but there's a ton of bad endings for it, which adds to the game length in other ways.
- if you want a game that's not just a VN, play the first Sunrider. it's free. if the SRPG elements work for you well enough with the cast, both do improve. but hopefully something else is driving you, not just the one game.

Well, I got the bundle. Now that I've had a chance to research how long the various VNs are, this was a crazy good deal. I also read about the patches from the visual novel subreddit. Nekopara and Karakara have patches that would need to be bought separately, but they'll apparently be on sale from Denpasoft next week so anyone interested in those patches should wait until then to get them.

I also started reading World End Economica! I'm an hour in and it's good so far. I'm worried the religious angle might start getting preachy but so far it's been handled well. The dude clearly needs to learn some lessons about greed but he doesn't need to be converted to learn them so I hope it doesn't go down that route.
