Today’s update will be brought to by Kiai Punctuation. It’s like regular punctuation, except that I type “kiai” every time I would normally type a period.

The heroes, and Zoey, go to the Snowpoint Gym, and we quickly learn that this battle will be four pokemon per side kiai Candice gets herself pumped by tying her jacket around her waist kiai

To counter Sneasel, an ice pokemon, Ash sends out Grotle kiai Sneasel is so freaking fast that it can just slide around the stage, which is made of ice, and freeze Grotle with icy wind, but a surprise icy wind/rock climb combo knocks Sneasel out kiai Brock then explains that Ash took Paul's Torterra's strategy kiai

Medichan versus Staraptor kiai Ash's strategy is basically to just go in there and beat his enemy up, I guess, and Staraptor proves to be very competent at this kiai

Candice sends out Snover, so Ash sends out Chimch--Gliscor kiai Okay kiai Very clever, sending a ground/flying pokemon against an ice pokemon kiai Granted, Gliscor does know fire fang, but come on, but it gets its ass destroyed kiai

Ash finally just sends out Chimchar, who ends this battle in about thirty seconds and without being hit once kiai

She finally sends out Abomasnow, and when Chimchar's flamethrower proves to not be strong enough to win immediately, Ash recalls it and sends out Staraptor because he hopes Abomasnow’s slow speed will allow Staraptor’s aerial ace to--Staraptor is instantly knocked out kiai

Ash sends out Grotle because it's the worst possible choice, and Abomasnow knocks Grotle out in literally less than three seconds kiai With wood hammer kiai

Ash sends out Chimchar again kiai
"Think you can win because you have the advantage, huh?!"
Our translators, ladies and gentlemen kiai Our translators kiai

Chimchar is only just barely able to keep up by dodging because of Abomasnow's overwhelming power, but since even Staraptor's speed wasn't good enough, Ash isn't sure how to win kiai He then remembers that there are ice shards everywhere because this stage is made of ice, so he has Chimchar ride them around to move faster than it normally could kiai This improved speed allows it to land a few hits, and follow up with a powerful flame wheel to the gut kiai Abomasnow tanks the flame wheel and jump plain grabs Chimchar while it's being hit and-- gets knocked out kiai Hah kiai

Candice gives Ash the badge, and just then, Paul arrives and challenges her to a gym battle, thus setting up the next episode kiai

Paul's judgment is a bit questionable, but I can agree with you. I hope it doesn't stay a Monferno for long, it's the worst in the line.

A PYRAMIDING RAGE!

Candice agrees to fight Paul the next day, and Ash acts friendly to Paul, who brushes him off, and somehow literally everyone except Brock is surprised. I'll let Zoey and Candice off, since they've never met Paul before, but what the hell, Ash and Dawn, what were you expecting? It’s not like Paul is going to have off screen character development.

The next day, Reggie (Paul's brother) drives to the pokemon center (we get literally no explanation for why he happened to be in this remote city that few people bother traveling to), and asks to watch Paul's battle. Then, by chance, the Battle Pyramid shows up, and Ash mentions that he beat it, which surprises Paul. Now, we don’t learn this immediately, but **** it, I’ll just tell you now for spacing purposes: Reggie lost to Brandon in front of Paul, and lost without knocking out a single one of Brandon’s pokemon. The heroes, Reggie, Paul, and Zoey go to the pyramid, and Candice randomly shows up I guess I don’t know, and Paul challenges Brandon to a battle. Brandon is here to study the Snowpoint Temple, because you can just go around making archeological discoveries rather than carefully learning things piece-by-piece over the course of years and with much effort, so he sends an underling off with Temple Maiden Maria, the caretaker, and says that he’ll be there soon… after he battles Paul while the heroes, Zoey, Reggie, and Candice watch.

Paul's Magmar versus Brandon's Regirock, and-- Paul withdraws Magmar and instead throws out Hariyama. Despite the type advantage, Hariyama gets wiped easily. Paul sends out Electabuzz, which confuses Dawn, but Ash catches it instantly: Electabuzz knows brick break. However, it isn’t enough, and when Electabuzz’s protect is pierced by rock slide (I don’t know), it goes down. Brandon sends Registeel, so Paul sends out Magmar again. After a few blows, he withdraws it and sends out Nidoking. It does well, the best of any of Paul’s pokemon, but still loses easily.

Brandon taunts Paul, and Paul gets angry, revealing that he only wants to fight Brandon at all because Reggie lost to him, and that the job of gym leaders/frontier brains is just to test trainers and give them strength. Paul, however, declares that his own willpower gives him strength, so I get the impression here that Paul holds this system in some contempt. Brandon asks why Paul battles with pokemon in the first place, and Paul responds by sending out his Lairon. As far as comebacks go, you have to admit, sending out an nearly invincible monster is a pretty good one.

Brandon sends out Regice, and has it use iron defense in preparation for a long, drawn-out battle... Only for Regice to freeze it with ice beam and end the battle in literally five seconds, oh my God, that's hilarious. Paul sends out Ursaring, but Regice paralyzes it with zap cannon and Brandon sends out Regirock to finish it off. Paul doesn't even bother giving Ursaring commands, recognizing it’s now useless, and lets it get knocked out. Paul finally sends out his Magmar again, so we've come full circle, and indeed, it's defeated easily.

Brandon criticizes Paul for letting his emotions control him, and Paul just takes it and leaves. Zoey and Candice leave together to have a "kiai battle." Reggie and Brandon both agree: Paul and Ash should have a battle ten days from now at the pokemon center near Lake Acuity. Why such a weird place and time? Because-- I don't know. I really just don’t know.

Brandon's underling and Maria drive up in a panic, and tell us that "something terrible has happened at the temple…” but they of course don’t bother giving any details.

Actually a pretty good episode about Paul’s history.

The episode kind of showed that Ash using his strongest Pokemon would have no problem defeating Paul. Sure Brendon used all three regis (oppose to just 1 against Ash) and based on Paul's overall team he wasn't using his 6 strongest Pokemon, but Ash would've held up much better than what Paul did.

"A mysterious group of people have sealed off the temple!" Brandon decides to fly there in the battle pyramid immediately, so everyone (including the children) come along.

On the way, Maria explains the legend of the Snowpoint Temple: Long ago, the beautiful Snowpoint Forest had a volcano appear and erupt, which seems like something that couldn’t actually happen but whatever. Fortunately, Reigigigigigigigigigigigas appeared and, with Regice, Regirock, and Registeel, halted the volcano's eruption and saved the city, at least. Later, Reigigigigigigigas turned itself into a stone, and the others turned into guardian pillars made of the basic elements: rock, ice, and steel. Yeah. Those are... some basic elements, alright. A temple was built to house them all, and apparently it had absolutely no security of any kind.

Brandon's underling puts a view of the temple's entrance of the Pyramid's Star Trek-style viewscreen (no, I have no idea where the camera for this shot is located), and we learn that the people in question are J and her underlings. By the way, the Pyramid flies like forty miles, so I have no idea what the timing here is for Maria and the underling driving to the temple, seeing J, coming back, and the Pyramid flying over, all in like one hour.

J's underlings have their literally at least fifty Metang and Skarmory attack the Pyramid and force it to land in the forest. Brandon tells his underling to repair the Pyramid while everyone else takes a hovercraft to the temple. God, I would hate to be the only person whose job it is to fix a flying building stranded in the middle of a forest. Pikachu and Piplup fight the literally more than fifty Skarmory and Metang to let the hovercrafft pass, and the heroes follow J into the temple.

J has her Salamence attack the guardian pillars just in time for the heroes and Brandon to arrive and ask her politely to reconsider. She does not, and the stone glows and… glows. She then attacks the stone as well, which wakes Regigigigigigiggigiggigigigigigigigas up. It freaks out and attacks everything randomly, bringing down the temple. The humans all escape, and it’s buried.

Regigigigas breaks free, so Brandoon has his Regis attack it so he can capture it and calm it. They eventually succeed it taking it down, but J swoops in and-- and gets her ass kicked when Brandon's Regis attack her when Regigigigas uses confuse ray on them. Maria notes that this is just like the legend of the pillars protecting Regigigigigigigas, only now it’s Brandon’s Regis and they’re actually, you know, protecting it, instead of doing nothing except letting J attack themselves. The four of them, angry and confused, attack things randomly, so the heroes go back to the hovercraft and follow while J escapes. Brandon calls Officer Jenny and tells her to be ready for Regigigigigigas, because Jennyy’s Growlithe is definitely a match for four monsters of legend that shoot death rays out of their hands as long as it has prep time.

Meanwhile, J has her hovership restrain Regigigigigas with lasers and glue, but the ship is damaged. J shoots a flesh-to-stone beam at the immobilized Regigigigigas, but Regirock takes the hit and... turns to stone. Huh. Again with Registeel and Regice. Brandon realizes that the Regis going with it was all to protect Regigigigas (duh), and tells Brock to take the controls of his hovercraft (because a fiteen year-old even knows how to drive a car, right?), and throws himself into one of J's flesh-to-stone beams. Seeing this finally calms Regigigigigas down, and the heroes have Pikachu and Piplup distract J for just long enough for Regigigigas to break free and destroy J's flesh-to-stone gun.

J is ready to fight some more, but her clients get scared by the commotion and retract their offer, so J just kind of leaves. That was a cool way to end J’s appearances the first, like, three times, but now it’s just kind of annoying.

Maria asks Regigigigas to help the stoned Regis and Brandon because they did the best they could to protect it, so it uses hidden power to fix everyone (?!?). Regigigigigigigigas turns into a sphere again just like that, and Brandon takes it, telling it to "trust your future to me." Wow, that's... some request. Brandon places the sphere back in the temple, agrees to fix the temple, and has his pokemon become the new pillars, which seems like the worst deal ever if you don’t feel like becoming an inanimate pillar.

Overall, a meh episode. A strong villain is counterbalanced by ridiculousness even by Pokemon’s standards and constant insanity.

The heroes are on a train to Lake Acuity. Ash declares his intention to beat Paul and startles a guy walking with some boxed lunches. Oh boy, it's Looker. Well, I never played Platinum, so I have no opinion about him. Looker mentions that an electric pokemon assists on the train, so the heroes decide to investigate it because why not?

It's an Ampharos, and it uses its powers to power the train by helping with the hardest parts like steep inclines and starting from a full stop, because it’s not like Japan is well known for having the most advanced train system in the world or anything. The heroes and Looker are just allowed to go up to the engineer and say hi despite real trains being second only to airports in stupid amounts of security. Maybe ships. I don’t know much about ships.

The train suddenly makes a full stop because of a red light. The engineer calls to the command center, which tells him there's no trouble ahead and the red light isn't malfunctioning. The engineer sends the conductor to check out ahead, and Looker, who suspects something is wrong and is pretending to just be a completely normal guy, asks to come with him so he can view the scenery.

So there’s an irrelevant heroes-versus-Team Rocket A-plot here, but the B-plot with Looker is a little more interesting: he determines Team Galactic illegally transported something over the rail system, but doesn’t know what. He calls it in to his superiors, who tell him to proceed on and investigate.

The heroes and Looker each return to the train, and with no one except Looker aware of the danger, everyone continues on to the next episode.
