And? It's a party game. They show antagonism towards each other in one piece of official art and...a single opening intro, where they just look at each other menacingly. There's nothing else. You can't just say "By the way, Waluigi is Luigi's rival" and expect me to care about it.

Mario/Luigi is totally a personal rivalry between P1 vs. P2. Everybody picked a side as kids about who they liked better.

And technically there was the original Mario Bros. They started out as rivals, not friends!

Terra isn't a protagonist, and Lavos isn't an antagonist.

Terra isn't an opposition to Kefka, and Lavos is pretty much a mindless being with no capability of "opposing" anyone.


Note to all you Terra people before you jump at me: I'm not saying she isn't a main character, I'm saying she's not a protagonist - big difference.

Luigi/Waluigi started out as rivals too. Waluigi was literally born for the soul purpose of giving Luigi a rival. He is a single minded individual whose sole purpose in life is to mildly inconvenience Luigi through sporting events. It's the best rivalry.

No, one scene where she stabs Kefka doesn't make her more of his rival than anyone else. They literally share two scenes together, about as many as Terra/Kefka do.

Nobody in FFVI really monopolizes a rivalry with Kefka because of how the cast is structured.

Except Celes actually has a history with Kefka - the Floating Continent actually is a Celes vs Kefka thing. Celes and Kefka are the only two living Imperial Generals left since Kefka kills Leo. They actually have a connection.


If you want to give Terra a rivalry to anybody, it's Gestahl, the man who took her into the Empire since she was a baby. And look at that: Gestahl is the leader of the Empire for World of Balance, and is supposedly the big bad guy up until Floating Continent. Funny how that works, he's the bad guy during World of Balance where people give Terra the most importance to. Almost like World of Balance is Terra vs Gestahl, and World of Ruin is Celes vs Kefka.

And yes, they have a connection, but the game literally does nothing with it other than Celes choosing to cast her lot with the heroes by stabbing Kefka.

Kefka has no rivalry with any specific person in the WoR because you literally don't see him until the end of the game.

And guess who will have a dialogue with him...!

Waluigi's only appearances have been in the Mario Sports/Party spinoffs. His only appearance in any game of consequence is as an Assist Trophy in Brawl, and his lack of previous experience probably explains why he attacks with a tennis racket when appearing in that capacity (a nod to his debut game). Dude really doesn't have much characterization of his own, and he probably gets most of his popularity from that webcomic.

literally not worth talking to you about this if you think Shadow jumping in to stop Kefka means overthrows the Celes segment. Celes's part actually had meaning to it pertaining to the two specific characters. Celes and Kefka's rivalry is much more than that scene, the scene just deepens the connection brought up in the Magitek Facility.

And Celes is the one person in the party that actually decides to fight Kefka, and gather up the party to do so. Celes is the one force that instantly wanted revenge immediately after she woke up 1 year after the Floating Continent. If it weren't for Celes, Kefka would be ruling the world. If Terra was left alone, she'd stay in Mobliz.

I really disagree with that. I don't really think the Celes/Kefka thing on the Floating Continent is a "Personal grudge between the two of them" moment. It's more Celes picking her side and doing the opposite of what Gestahl wanted her to do. I think you're overrating how big of a deal it was to their rivalry because Celes doesn't stab Kefka because she hates him. She does it to show once and for all whose side she's on.

And I didn't say Kefka/Shadow was more important. It's just cooler.

And yes, Celes starts gathering everybody up, but that doesn't make her Kefka's rival. I honestly don't think she has more hatred for Kefka than anybody else or that Kefka hates Celes more than anybody else in the party. Kefka shows no specific caring for any one character in the ending, and if he DOES, it's Terra more than anybody else.

And Celes definitely didn't start out because she wanted revenge immediately on Kefka. She was about to kill herself because she thought there was no hope left. She went out because she had hope that Locke was still alive, and she wanted to find him. They all want to stop Kefka, but I feel like she cared more about finding Locke than stopping Kefka, and I don't think she wants to stop Kefka because he's Kefka and she hates him. She wants to stop him to save the world, like everybody else.
