I beat Pokemon Ruby today. Should I play Diamond next? I've been told that Diamond and Pearl are janky.

Platinum is the best Gen 4 game; it fixes a lot of problems and has better pacing.

If you can get Platinum, play Platinum. D/P are good but have their flaws, but Platinum fixed almost every single flaw that D/P had while adding a ton of new content.

Yeah, I'd just play Platinum. If finding a real copy is too expensive, I'd just play it using alternative methods.

Doesn't D/P have an issue with saving?

D/P saving is extremely slow. can be like a minute long if you've added/removed any pokemon from your PC

I don't think the saves fail or anything they just take forever.

Yeah, even Platinum takes a long time in my experience. The last time I checked, my save file from 15 years ago was still good, though.

Then look into the ocean.... I know people are keen on playing the original copies but when a game goes for far higher than it should, you know where you should go. Plus D/P are essentially the same game outside of small choices and Pokemon. Platinum essentially fixes everything wrong with Gen 4, which is hilarious because they managed to screw it up for BD/SP.

The gen 4 games are long out of print, and there's fakes everywhere. Don't risk getting conned, go find Platinum elsewhere.

If you got a hacked switch, you can turn Brilliant Disappointment into Luminescent Platinum, if that's an option you're into.

I don't really feel like DP were necessarily "jank" compared to Platinum, they play/feel quite similar the vast majority of the time, but Plat handles one particular scene in the climax of the story in a different way from DP, and that difference alone makes it worth playing IMO.

Plat also does have more in the way of postgame content (much like Emerald) that you'll want to play that one instead if that sort of thing interests you. If you're just the sort to stop playing once you beat the league though, then that won't matter.

Platinum makes the early game smoother, at least.

You get your starter quicker, fight your rival earlier, the gym order is changed up so there's less BS (aka not waiting for Fantina to come back from whatever the fuck she was doing so you could fight her...), etc

It also fixes the Pokemon availability, you can actually use a lot of the gen 4 cross-evos during Platinum's campaign whilst stuff like Gallade, Magmortar/Electivire, Leafeon, Togekiss and the like were locked off to postgame in Diamond and Pearl.
The biggest benefit of this change? The Fire type Elite Four member actually has a proper team now. Lest we forget the playboy bunny, the giant steel snake and the fucking blimp

If you can't get Platinum, then it's hard to justify the original D/P over the remakes on the Switch. It at least solves the problem of the agonizingly slow speed of the game, addresses some of the Pokedex availability via the Underground (which is absolutely amazing in the remakes), and whatever jankiness the games introduced I honestly didn't notice.

But then, I'm a weirdo who goes against the grain by disliking Gen II, really enjoying Gen III, and for my hipster moment I loved Gen V before it was cool to do so. So I probably have super rose-tinted glasses.

I should probably note - Pearl was my first Pokemon game.

It got me into Pokemon, which is good, it's just kinda made irrelevant by Platinum. Always go for Platinum over DP, imo
I don't hate it, there's just an improved version that just makes me think 'there's not really a point playing it'.

Yeah, a lot of the older Pokemon games go for super crazy amounts for some reason. Collectors man, they'll pay out the nose for a lot of things.
