April 15th if you haven't done them yet and live in the US. got 5 days left to super procrastinators, double check to see what free filings are available to those with 79k or less if it's 1040 this year. taxslayer went up compared to last. and hopefully their new direct filing program expands because it's seriously bullshit that it ain't free by default.

It's supposed to be! Intuit lied and said they'd make a program that's free to everyone. I think the government is suing them now

Cheapest I could find, especially for state returns. Been using them for years with no issues. Maybe not the bells and whistles of a TurboTax but good enough for me!

I haven't done taxes yet but only because I'm pissed off as I'm going to owe a decent chunk

I always file Single with 0 to make sure I never owe money and usually get money back. My wife fucked up and put down married with like 3 or 4, basically put it down in a way that registered as me not working so she got my tax allowance too.

So when I preliminarily put it in, we owed a couple of thousand at least and I just haven't had the mental strength to run through all the tax allowances to bring it down (I sell on eBay so there's definitely ways I can reduce it)

I just used the free fillable forms. It's straight-forward if you have a standard tax situation (i.e. you aren't self-employed).

States can range from super easy to horribly complicated.

I have self employment and several other 1099s and mortgage interest deductions and such, and my taxes are still simple to do since the standard deduction is so high nowadays. I really thought my itemization would be better than the standard this year but it wasn't even close.

Being able to import from previous years is worth FreeTaxUsa for me though. Also state filing.

I have to say that paying mortgage for a portion of a building as your home definitely complicates things

But the standard deduction still ended up being better so not sure it even mattered in the end

I used to do my own taxes and had no issue.

Now I'm self employed and travel a lot for work and sell a lot of products so I pretty much have to itemize

I just hire people to do it.

Still hate tax season cause being self employed means I pay a lot and also getting the paperwork together for the people to do it still ends up being a lot of work.

Funny story.

In Pennsylvania, they used to do the registration stickers one year as MM YY and then the next year they'd do them as YY MM. I have no idea why. But I didn't know this.

So my parents moved my grandfather into a home and basically gave me one of the cars they inherited as a result. Old car. Nothing anyone would pay any attention to. One day my dad asked me when the last time it'd been inspected was. I shrugged and looked at the sticker. It said 06 08. I didn't think anything of this because it was the first half of 2008. Turns out it was due to be inspected in August 2006.

I work for the IRS so I filed ages ago. Early is on time and on time is late. I never have a balance though, and the refund was better than usual this year because I bought an EV last year

Please don't be like the people who listen to "tax hacks" that they see on tik tok and claim $20,000+ in credits you aren't entitled to.

You'd be shocked at the number of people who are trying it (both last year and this year) and the extra work it creates makes our manual review process take so much longer. It won't be an issue if your information is all accepted automatically (which should be the case for most people who file correctly), but on the off chance you get selected for a review prepare to wait a long ass time thanks to those jokers.

That doesn't make sense considering you're still getting docs sent to you late Feb (which is very close to the LLC filing date) and your taxes get accepted within a couple hours even if you submit in the last week.

Well if you haven't filed on time you get a very stern talking to and that's even if you are due a refund. If you have an unpaid or unfiled balance it could be grounds for dismissal.

also followup, at a glance cashapp may not handle 1099-NEC (independent contractor) work as well as 1040.com does but it did do W-2 as well if not slightly better. again, i'm not sure why or if this was just a circumstance of NYC relative to other places, but when you've multiple free options it's always worth spending the extra few minutes to try out what they give.

for sure cash app was easier between them, it has a better system for copy/paste, and both have W2 lookups if it's ADP.

The US tax system is such bullshit. I got rejected multiple times and I couldn't figure out why and no one could tell me. I had to guess my way into figuring out what I was doing wrong. And the worst part is that the number I was getting wrong changed absolutely nothing about what I needed to pay or what I was going to get in return.

How are you filling? You should get an email after it rejects explaining why it didn't go through.

Common issues include a wrong SSN (of claiming a dependent who has already been claimed) or failing to include a Form 8962 if you have health insurance through the state marketplace.

But regardless the rejection should either provide an explanation or at the very least a rejection code that can be googled

It told me that it was because of the homebuyer's credit, but not what about it. I was trying to repay the same amount I've paid every year over a decade. The thing it was rejecting on was the question of how much of it I have previously repaid. They know how much I repaid, but no one could tell me. So much time wasted waiting for and dealing with "customer support" to no avail. So I just kept resending until I got the right amount.

But the thing is, it literally does not matter for this year's filing. It won't matter until I repay in full. I thought I was on my last payment, then I figured maybe I have one left next year. Turns out I'll be repaid in full two tax seasons from now.

Credit was taken in 2008.
First repayment would have been on 2010 taxes.

If you took the full credit of 7500 then you should have made 13 payments and this would be your 14th.

But that's ideally. This credit can get crazy complicated by the variety of different changes to your situation that can occur over 15 years. Maybe it was taken on joint taxes but then you got divorced? Maybe the house was sold or condemned for a loss. Maybe the house now belongs to the person who used to be listed second on taxes. Maybe you and your spouse take turns changing who gets listed first each year (Do NOT do this !!!)

There are actually dozens of different scenarios people have found themselves in that can impact how the repayment of that credit gets tracked and handled, and I don't think I'm exaggerating to say that I'm probably the only employee in my unit of 15~ who properly understands it.

That's exactly what I thought. I really hope I don't have too many more, but the person who was on it with me is deceased. I really hope I don't have to pay back all of his remaining part as well. That would suck.

So you've been paying 250 a year?

Did you file separately in '08 and claim 3750 each?

But regarding the number of payments it's possible a year got skipped awhile ago when our system was less good at noticing and so it wasn't rejected.
