My cousin got it as a gift from his mom when we were like, in middle/high school. Not like as a birthday present or anything, not in a situation where he got in instead of something else, just because his mom was in the store and thought it looked cool. It was so bad he was ANGRY at her for buying it for him, no for free, no strings attached

I played Red Steel and kind of enjoyed it until I got stuck on like an hour and a half long mission

when I talked to the NPC who assigned it in the main hub after the mission, it sent me to do the mission again from the start

that's when I dropped the game

I consider NSBW, but took Galaxy over it because it was also very successful and also better accailmed. I'm atill surprised it hasn't seen more support.

I think it's between Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Mario Kart, Galaxy, Brawl and NSBW.

If you weight dedicated gaming site opinions much higher than general ans kore casual, TP also works I suppose. Wii is kinda a casual console though. It's somewhat hilarious my comment yesterday followed lots of Xenoblade votes but it's the most b8 bubble pick ever maybe, vast majority of Wii owners have no idea what it is. I'd throw it on if it were a favorites list though.

Relitigating the Mario Rushmore topic a bit but it is actually a little surprising how Galaxy wasnt THAT big a deal in the grand scope of the Wii. Now obviously its an amazing game that won a load of awards and (along with the DS New Super Mario Bros) undid the huge brand damage that Sunshine did. It really established Super Mario as a top quality series again. However, the sales were not what you would expect for a Super Mario on the Wii. It has I think the lowest attach rate of any first Super Mario game on console with Galaxy 2 having the lowest overall. And its not just numbers either, the mindshare just wasnt quite there. By contrast New Super Mario Bros Wii took over the world when it came out, it was the Wii game of those last few years despite critical reception not being on the same level. It was a much bigger deal.

Of the core three of Brawl, Galaxy, and Twilight Princess, Brawl is definitely the one. The hype was insane, it was Nintendos biggest (non-Pokmon) launch ever for like a decade, and it did sell the most of those three. I would even take Twilight Princess over Galaxy because it was such an important launch game.

Now I would love to say Xenoblade because its fantastic and some of what it was doing technologically was impressive on console and just absurd on the Wii. However this is far too stacked a field for that.

Galaxy sold just below the Smash on the same console. I'm pretty sure the 3D Mario has not gotten above the Smash since N64 so that's kind of a weird thing to hold against Galaxy while praising Brawl imo. It's kinda the same situation. Not that I can not be convinced Brawl is above it here but yeah. Wii just sold a lot to families that have used it for non-traditional gaming so percentage wise they did a lot worse. This goes for a lot of franchises on Wii. I actually want to throw Just Dance into the group I mentioned before although it's not one game in particular. They kept making Just Dance for Wii so many years after the console died and stopped being supported and Wii U stopped being supported until it finally wasn't possible anymore. That's how big a deal it was on Wii.

3D Mario also did better than Smash on 3DS and Wii U. I think you are right that a lot of these core games did not see amazing attach rates because families and others bought different games for the Wii than the core Nintendo franchises. But I also think Galaxy didnt do as well as other franchise entries in those terms, Twilight Princess did much better for a Zelda game at the time than Galaxy did for a Super Mario game.

Honestly Im tempted to say Donkey Kong Country Returns because what that game did releasing in late 2010 right before Wii software sales collapsed was really impressive.

Speaking of Just Dance since nobody has said it: Red Steel was a Ubisoft game!

Oh yeah okay, I just checked too and it was closer on Wii U than anything at least. I forgot 3DS also had a Smash, I'm not sure that necessarily says a lot about Mario. TP being a launch game probably also helped its Zelda game numbers. There's also that both TP and Brawl had a bit more mixed opinions from fans of the franchises at the time while Galaxy was extremely well praised. It's been up and down through time with the other two. Still considering switching a bit around, but I don't think Brawl and Galaxy are far apart.

The more I think about Just Dance, the more I want it to be there for being a huge casual hit but moreso for getting Wii releases all the way up to 2020 until it stopped being technically possible. It's too late to swing that momentum though and probably also something b8 can't get themselves to vote on as a whole. Xenoblade on the other hand might have been in contention for least deserving thing to be here mentioned when not just naming favorites, but now with the recent Sin and Punishment vote, I don't think I can say that in good faith.

I mean to be fair it was the game massively beating its sales expectations in Europe that got the game over to America, if it had tanked there it never would have been released regardless of the campaign. Still Operation Rainfall did get a lot of eyes on the game which helped it do well in the first place and they got Pandoras Tower outside of Japan. Plus it was just a big moment in general. And the game is a technical marvel on the Wii, it deserves credit for that.

Its not on my Rushmore but its probably in the 8-10 range. Not that odd a pick!

It's a fantastic story for sure, but barely making across the sea is to me a super weird criteria for four biggest things though. Like, it's super impressive, but expectations were also incredibly low. Best and most popular RPG isn't really backed by any numbers as far as I'm concerned and it's also misleading in how good it sounds because this is a console that is not at all known for RPGs. 8-10 range perhaps but sure is a long way up to the contenders imo. I'm convinced that many Wii owners even knows the game exists and Smash is probably responsible for a good chunk of the ones that do, it's a very casual console.

Wii Sports
Wii Fit
Super Mario Galaxy
Mario Kart Wii

Wii Sports is obvious. Wii Fit is being overlooked a little here, it was huge and the balance board add-on itself is iconic in its own way. Galaxy is the most critically acclaimed game and the one that has stood the test of time the best. It was tough for the last one, I was between Kart, Brawl, and New SMB. I'll give Kart the edge due to sales and the impact it continues to have in speedrunning, which has kept it current.

As far as numbers as an RPG go, it pretty much has to be best in terms of general reception since it has a 92% critic average. On most popular I am less certain but what other notable Wii RPGs were there? It was not a great platform (or honestly, generation) for those.

This whole discussion and topic brings back memories of how furious people were about the Wii and Nintendo daring to make games for people who didnt normally play games. The general attitude towards Nintendo was definitely at an all-time low in the late Wii era. They had had less successful times but that is probably the only time they were ever widely hated beyond typical console war stuff. By contrast with say the Wii U people were just not paying them heed at all.

Super Paper Mario probably sold better than Xenoblade, but it's not really an RPG, unless you wanna start counting stuff like Zelda too.

Metroid Prime 3 probably deserves to be on here less. It got a lot of hype in hardcore circles before it came out, but it was a pretty big flop, sales-wise. One of the few Nintendo franchises that sold less on the Wii than with its big Gamecube game. Its reception from players was pretty blah too.

I mostly remember very positive feedback to Prime 3 at launch but yeah, it made no splash. It did sell better than Prime 2 but it not really taking off is probably why Metroid was in such a weird spot for a decade. I would absolutely endorse Xenoblade over Prime 3.

The other aspect of it is that Xenoblade launched in the west at a time when interest in the Wii was cratering (and by the US release, had cratered) yet still overperformed in terms of sales. It was basically the highlight of the late Wii era.

In general it was a very successful console, a lot of the contenders here probably way outsold expectations. In Xenoblade's numbers, that's abysmal compared to the rest of these games. For most Wii owners it might as well have not existed. I kinda want to be convinced but most arguments read to me sometging like; basically we really love this game because is is more in line with what kinds of games we like and it's amazing it even came to exist. Like yeah it sold relatively well, but the expectations to it had already considered when it came out. Sports, Resort, Fit, Mario Kart, NSBW, Just Dance were all bigger sells of the late years. Basically the Nintendo Selects of the same games gave the console what life it had near the end.

Fwiw, I think it's fun to discuss and if I can antirally one of my two favorite Wii games to the top doing this that's kind of a win in itself. But I absolutely don't see it outside of a b8 or similar narrow kind of view where we aren't big fans of most big games there.

Wii Sports
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Twilight Princess
Just Dance

Wii Sports was the game of the system, being a pack-in and all that.

though Brawl is the black sheep of the series for good reason it was also the most hyped game of the series.

Twilight Princess has definitely been memory holed at this point in terms of hype/importance but when that game was announced it was a huge deal. this was the return of a dark and "serious" Zelda, none of that kiddy Wind Waker shit. yeah, remember when that's how WW was viewed? it was in that timeframe when we had the darker, more serious, adult Link come out and people nostalgic over OoT were flipping their shit (as fans of MM were going "uhhh it was dark here too y'know"). Breath of the Wild is to the Switch as Twilight Princess is to the Wii. double checking, for the first month its attachment rate was 87%. now eventually this went down, way down, and people realized that this was legit just a gamecube game but nobody outside of people on gamefaqs bought a gamecube either so uh... yeah.

Just Dance isn't our audience at all. but that's also the jokes the Wii has always had, it isn't a console for "hardcore gamers." sure there's Nintendo but it's such a casual system. well that's what Just Dance is: it is the casual game. ratings and reviews, totally mid. didn't matter, people were playing this shit like crazy. so much that it became the 2nd biggest franchise Ubisoft has ever had and the 3rd game was the 2nd best selling game in 2011. remember Dance Central? remember how Kinect was a thing and Microsoft was pushing dancing on it? like this isn't "our" game but the Wii wasn't "our" console either, the hardcore base wasn't at the center of the console's success, it was the Just Dance crowd that made a lot of it. that needs a rep on any rushmore and there isn't a better game for it. yeah, Wii Sports exists as the pack-in game but this was the one people actually bought.

Well to be fair Xenoblade did come out outside of Japan at the very tail-end of the Wiis lifespan, mere months before the Wii U in North America. The Wii also famously had a massive cliff-edge of popularity so those last two years were kind of nothing. No game was going to bring the Wii back to its heights, as evidenced by how quickly Skyward Sword flamed out only to do better on Switch.
