Today's Character
For three decades, The Undertaker loomed over the WWE landscape like a menacing shadow, spelling out doom for those who dared cross him. Imbued with seemingly mystical abilities and preternatural in-ring skill, The Deadman was a WWE great in a class by himself, and no list of legends would be complete without him.

As much as I loved Home Improvement growing up, there's probably only 2 characters that would have a shot at breaking 50% on here: Al Boreland and Wilson. MAYBE Randy Taylor.

Jill, Brad, and Mark are all getting below 50%. Mark might get under 20%.

this is hilarious

and obviously it's the matches, that's why the wrestling nerds don't like him. he was the wrestler that taught me that matches could be boring. for a good stretch of my first few years as a fan, undertaker would be in the semi main event of ppvs and i never made it through one of his matches at 3am to see the main event. has a few good wrestlemanias between like, 21 and 26 and like, one year of being an interesting full time guy (2008), alongside a good portion of the worst angles in wrestling history. has never been for me!

See also: All the terrible supernatural or just plain hokey bullshit that's shown up in one form or another in pro wrestling over the last ~decade that has been defended by people saying "Well, it was okay when the Undertaker did it hurr durr!" when in fact it wasn't okay when the Undertaker did it as plenty of us hated it back then too.

I could go on a longer rant about this but I know I'm already coming off as a joyless nerd so I'll stop there.

Ok that's fair

I mean I don't agree he generally had bad matches after like 1995 or so, particularly not enough to be considered the poster child of them.

I also love dumb hokey stuff and question why people who are staunchly against it would be into pro wrestling to begin with (and no it's not just a WWE thing WWE just has more of it) so obviously I don't care about that aspect.

But yeah. That's fair. I'm not saying he should have 100% like I was just wondering why it was all the wrestling mega nerds saying no.

firmly "good" at promos? you are kidding yourself! I'll give him more rope in the ring than on promos!

I think we value character work very differently for promo skill if you're going to claim he was a bad promo.

I'm not saying Undertaker was an amazing promo and his material was often garbage, but he did what he needed to to bring hype for his character and the match/feud. Like I definitely think it's the type of character that can just devolve into long winded pointless babble ala Bray Wyatt but Undertaker generally didn't do that and would just talk about souls and shit and how the other guy was gonna rest in peace and be on his way. I'm not going to go find Undertaker promos on YouTube to watch but in the context of the show it was effective and never made me want to change the channel.

Like he's nowhere near my favorite but this "he's a bad wrestler and/or a bad promo" stuff is completely alien to me. Not even normal workrate snob smarks think that generally-- this is a very bold proclamation.

I suppose I can actually kind of agree with this in some ways, considering the full watchthrough I did of 90s AJPW (which was 100% free of dumb hokey stuff) during COVID has seemingly turned me off of modern wrestling forever.

But that's part of my point. It's not like the sort of dumb hokey stuff I'm talking about was always a part of pro wrestling. It rose to prominence in WWF/E and primarily with the Undertaker, and the fact that it's now just near-universally accepted as some basic truth that his community theater nonsense is as much a part of the fabric of wrestling as the Irish Whip is a big part of why I hate the character so much.

Also, "Undertaker was bad in the ring" is a much more common take than you're giving it credit for. He had some good Mania matches but plenty of "normal workrate snobs" would tell you that he spent 90% of his career at minimum being lousy.

Yeah I dunno. Maybe the IWC has changed a lot since I paid attention to it (I frequented wrestling forums in the 2000s) but imo that would be a "hot take" and certainly not one I'd agree with.

But to each their own-- I personally can't stand to watch like 95% of Triple H matches (we probably share common ground in thinking his mania matches with Taker are garbage-- I actually preferred their first mania match in the early 00s to his hyped ones) and a lot of people say he's good too.
