My issue with the changes she made is that they ruin what I get from the tone of the song. The musical feel of the song is the perfect backdrop for such a heartfelt lyrical plea - it's an absolutely beautiful composition. Making the lyrics into more of a "fuck around and find out" story just conveys to me a lack of caring when it comes to that sort of thing; it's just making it about the threat she poses, not the one Jolene poses. It's too much of a departure.
