I see quite a few of these stories, and not just in the US. First time someone was successful, unfortunately.

Why isn't there a barrier

"Recidivism is a real issue and the second issue we have in this city is a severe mental health illness problem that was played out at 125th Street and Lexington Avenue at the subway station," Mayor Eric Adams said. "And he was a recidivist, several severe mental health issues, indicators of violence. When you do an analysis and a cross correlation, you will see its the same people, over and over again."

Carlton McPherson, 24, was arrested and charged with murder. Officials say he has multiple prior arrests and has a long and violent past.

On Tuesday morning, the suspect was captured on video sliding down a banister as detectives led him out of an East Harlem precinct.

He was released without bail after he was arraigned on an October 31 arrest for assault, menacing, harassment and other charges in Brooklyn.

He failed to show up for court twice and a judge issued a warrant for his arrest. He was picked up and brought to court on Jan. 11, where bail was set for $2,000 -- which he posted. His next court date was set for July.

What a vile fucking piece of shit. He's so pleased with himself.
And yet again, NYC's criminal justice system is a fucking joke. How the fuck was he loose? The whole point of the bail system is to get people to show up for their fucking court dates and "stay clean" till trial. If you can't do that, you're supposed to get locked the fuck up!

The NYPD has responded to past incidents where the Bronx resident was acting erratically and authorities say he has a history of mental illness.

He planned his shove perfectly to time it so the poor victim had no chance. Don't you fuckers DARE give him a "mental health" pass!

The department is surging 800 officers, including some plainclothes, to random stations looking out for fare evaders and hoping that reduces overall crime.

Officials say many of those who committed crimes underground often didn't pay to enter. McPherson also has a prior arrest for fare evasion.

People w/ no respect for the law tend to commit crimes. Shocking.

They probably determined that the cost of maintenance for every single one is too high or something, or that the cost of failure is the inability to access the train. That said there is a clear provider for such electronic gates.

I don't really know how there could be.

If subways in america are anything at all like the london underground, you're already short on space and then the shuttle pulls up in slightyl different locations on the platform every time. Also there's a rapid turnaround time from the shuttle arriving to it setting off.

So a barrier would make this process significantly slower at best, but at worst completely screw up people's ability to even get onboard.

Yikes. This with all the women being knocked out is crazy.

if I ever go back to NYC and use the subway, I will not stand right next to the edge, until the train shows up. Too many of these stories. Maybe they should invent some kind of barrier that blocks the edge but then sinks into the floor when the train is parked

Unprovoked murder seems like a rather steep thing to try and copycat.

I went to NYC for vacation 2 years ago. I told everyone I used an Uber to get around, not the train and everyone thought I was crazy.

Yeah no one's ever done that before

The uptick of violence that has been happening in the NYC subway is scary.

I take the train occasionally in Chicago, and I stand way the fuck back until it has stopped, because of stories like this.

Not just Japan. Places like Korea, Hong Kong, and even China has barriers and better infrastructures on their transit stations. Tbh the trains system in the USA is trash

I was in Bulgaria a month ago and even their transit system has barriers that are like 10 feet tall that only open up when the train doors open.
