Why isn't there a barrier

I don't really know how there could be.

If subways in america are anything at all like the london underground, you're already short on space and then the shuttle pulls up in slightyl different locations on the platform every time. Also there's a rapid turnaround time from the shuttle arriving to it setting off.

So a barrier would make this process significantly slower at best, but at worst completely screw up people's ability to even get onboard.
