Aang is very somber with all his responsibility. He has that a bit in the cartoon too, but it's hidden underneath his fun side.

Katara became like a meek little girl instead of being the mom of the group.

Because the people making it didn't care for the source material. They just wanted to pad their resume.

It's why I typically don't watch adaptations after watching the source material. Some people enjoy a story they like being told differently. I only enjoy it if it's from a different perspective or in an alternate timeline.

I just finished it. I think it's good overall. All the stuff they did was Zuko was great. The costumes and special effects look spot on. Dialogue was too exposition-y. I don't think Aang, Azula, Iroh, and Katara aren't bad per se, but they don't have the same personalities as the cartoon.

Some things are different from the source material with the characters, but the casting choices are overall pretty good imo. The problem is that so much was trimmed down to fit into 8 episodes. It needed to be 16 at least to cover a book or two imo

A video essay YouTuber I really like called Big Joel has previously done really good videos about the original series and the poor movie adaptation, and he just started a series on why he thinks the new live action show is really bad. Vimeo link because it got copyright struck by YouTube

They didn't have much time to tell the story, some of the levity was sacrificed (unlike other adaptations which ditched ALL of it). In doing so, they lost a fair amount of character depth because it was during those "slice of life" episodes that the characters' personalities and friendships really developed. In the Netflix version, they are almost exclusively focused on the most dramatic bits, which means less lightness and more Aangst.

All that said, I still think it was a solidly executed retelling, even with the changes to the narrative. I am somewhat wary about how they'll handle Toph in season 2, as she has the most...difficult...personality and I think the likelihood of them having less of a balance between her brashness and her earnestness means that she's going to come off even more differently than the season 1 characters did from their original series incarnations, and that would be damn unfortunate.

I honestly love the new live action series. The actor for Sokka looks nearly exactly like the cartoon show, minus the multitude of jokes. Aangs actor also has Aangs translation to the live action perfectly.

People complain about the bad acting in the show but for some reason forget that the cast is reenacting the animated show to a T.

Honestly it feels like they were afraid to take chances because they were fans of the source.

Does this work for adult viewers, or is it aimed at kids, with adults watching it for nostalgia only? Like, live action Harry Potter vs. live action Percy Jackson.

Sokka is a lot more than meat and sarcasm. He becomes the chief representative for the Southern Water Tribe in Republic City after the events of ATLA.

They took a LOT of creative liberties with the source material while remaining true to most of it.

Well those eight episodes were as long as 16 episodes of the original series. Given they were more then double the length on average.

Well theyre about 40 minutes on average, so the math is mathing. They just changed some things around. If it were a 1:1 copy of the animated series we would be hearing just as many complaints.

It skips around a lot & crucial details are missed because of the shortening though. Like someone else said, it's like 80% drama, 20% lightheartedness or comedy. It's heavy to one side because they tried to cut out a lot to just focus on the main narrative instead of side details that reinforce the character's personalities. Maybe 16 episodes at 43~ or whatever minutes a piece is too much, but at least 12 or something split up would match the pace better. The spirit world stuff especially felt so unresolved & happens off screen when it concludes.

His sarcasm is the best part. Even Ember Island players knew that, the dude took notes from Sokka which was hilarious.

But imma be actual serious and say if they loved it they made a mistake. They love the cool confident people our heroes became and to honor that they took out all the flaws and stuff they felt weren't worthy of them in 2024, like the sexism stuff. But that was a mistake because we didn't grow to love them because they were perfect. We loved watching them learn and grow, and if you don't give them flaws, they can't do that. And Katara has nothing to do once more, I'm looking at you Shamalamadingdong.

Yeah, so overall it lines up with what I heard from others. It's good, but not as good as the animation, so then for all that budget & everything...What was the point?

I heard that it is decent on its own, but it really hurts a lot of the better moments in the OG, like Aangs backstory, personality, Kyoshi Warriors, and Sokka not being a bigot (which was a great redemption story for him).

It looks nice. Honestly I didn't hate it. It was a 6.5/10.

It's weird on a recreation and effects standpoint it's better then LA One Piece but on an overall show standpoint LA One Piece blows it away. It is a 9/10 show. The main difference is at the end of the day Avatar is beautiful to look at and does nothing wrong but feels hollow, while One Piece is just extremely fun and entertaining. Basically I have no interest in rewatching Avatar and only minimal interest in the next season, in hopes they will improve the show. And yet I already rewatched One Piece and am extremely excited to see how they adapt the story in later seasons.

Sorry every time I think about Live action Avatar I always am reminded of the other Live action adaptation that just does things so much better. In my opinion of course.

If executed properly I dont really mind such changes, and idk why people are obsessed with 1-1 remakes so much. At that point you minus well just watch the original cartoon if you're looking for the same thing.

When you remove something you need to add something otherwise it's just a lesser version.
