Typically, but not always, if you stay a year behind in gaming, it costs like half as much.

Games in the 90s were like $100 if we were to take into account inflation and even compared to then games are far more expensive to develop these days. The only thing that has made up the rising costs has been gaming becoming more widespread.

I'm currently at 74 hours on my run through Rebirth. I've done some of the side activities but certainly not all of them. That's more time than it takes to beat the original on a non 100% playthrough.

In terms of playtime, it's absolutely a complete game in its own right.

I bought Demon Souls for $30 new

Phantasy Star IV (GEN/MD) was $100 USD when it first released. That was 30 years ago.

A physical copy of Pier Solar (2010 for GEN/MD) direct from the developer was $50. After the studio had to restructure a few years ago, the price was $140 (Standard Edition) to $170 (Limited Edition).

The real price needed for a studio and its publisher to recover the costs of a complete AAA release--one shot, no DLC--can easily be $80 adjusted for inflation. Higher release prices might mean having to do what many gamers had to do in the 1990s: Being more careful over which games you choose to buy. It's also why renting games became such a popular option then, especially after Nintendo's attempts to make rentals of their games illegal failed.

[ I'm not saying that I like higher release prices, but any other option available is not sustainable. ]

Video games have never been a cheap hobby, ever. You just did not have to pay for them yourself when you were younger, and you dont understand inflation. Given inflation, games actually cost less now than they ever have.

The most I've spent on gaming in a single year was probably 2017

A PS4 + 2 games for ~$300
Sonic Mania for $20
A Switch with Mario Odyssey for <$400
Nier Automata and BoTW Deluxe for $70-$80

On a normal year without console purchases, it's typically $50-$150

$800 isn't too crazy, compared to a weekend Air BnB at a beachhouse

The inflation adjusted price of the Atari 2600 is $900.

When indie games are a third of the price or less, and have often been more enjoyable for the last decade or more, I'm completely fine with not paying these new prices and buying later or not at all. I rarely ever even paid $60 usd for games, even before this gens attempt to make it $70.

Eh, it's kind of in the middle. Some games are definitely overpriced but there are quite a few modern ones that are not. Games on average are MUCH cheaper than some other hobbies out there so I'll gladly accept gaming as hobby compared to something ridiculously expensive I used to play regularly like Magic The Gathering.

No, back when rental stores were still a thing. We didn't need to own games to enjoy them back in the 90s. We could just go to Blockbuster/Jumbo and rent 2 of them for 10 bucks. While we have Xbox Game Pass, there really isn't a system in place to rent games unless a mom and pop shop adds it in as a service.

while yes, Gamefly does exist, the difference in cost is way too much, even adjusting for inflation, for what I would be comfortable paying. Gamefly at least from what I've looked at charges 18 for a single rental for a month. Back when I was growing up it was 5 dollars for a week, even adjusted for inflation that's barely 9 dollars. And while you are technically getting more value from Gamefly, I don't need a game for a month to beat it. Give me 4 solid days to beat it, as I work from home and have a lot of free time between duties.
