Unless the stores staff more physical cashiers and everyone switched to using Instacart, this is unacceptable. I'm not paying extra to ever pay for shopping.

Lets stop paying cashiers and have customers do their job instead.

If a store really did something like that I imagine it would be treated about the same as news of Wendy's trying 'surge pricing'. People are going to be vehemently opposed to paying for the equivalent of a 'self checkout fast pass'.

Unbridled greed... if anything, they should be paying you for doing what used to be the cashier's job.

I mean paying the person for the privilege of them using force on you is already the model police use, so its possible it may eventually bleed into other industries.

I use self-checkout because it's faster than regular checkout lanes because I'm less likely to be held up by indecisive people changing their mind during checkout or want to fight with a cashier about expired coupons and don't have to deal with dictating bagging instructions for larger grocery purchases. I've left stores before because I wasn't going to wait around for some dumbass to figure out how they're going to pay as they held up the line.
However, I'm not going to duped into thinking self-checkout is a premium service.

what would they even give you for a """premium self checkout"""? disable the "unexpected item in bagging area" shit that happens for 2 out of every 3 items? not likely. if they dont disable that there's nothing they can do to make self-checkout better than just waiting in line for a cashier

I love using self checkout, but I 100% would not pay for that shit.

I doubt that retail and grocery stores want to staff more cashiers. I think this might be a gambit to try and push customers towards in-store or curbside pick-up, which the stores can probably tack on additional fee for. This would force people to use the slowest service unless they paid extra.

I never run into the "unexpected item in bagging area" unless I actually screwed up and I was aware I screwed up every time it happened.

Ill waste a cashiers time with an overflowing line in a heartbeat to avoid a charge for self-checkout. So will everyone else living below their means. These people drastically underestimate a persons impatience.

why stop there? put certain items sold by the store behind a paywall.

I looked into this and it seems like they now have a couple self checkout lanes reserved for Walmart+ subscribers, which is basically Walmart's version of Amazon Prime.

I don't subscribe bc I don't shop at Walmart, but I'm pretty sure it comes with a paramount+ subscription and free shipping so it's not like a terrible deal or anything

still dumb, definitely does feel like them taking something away so they can sell it back to you

With WM+ you also get free same day delivery from your local Walmart & you can scan as you go and pay from your phone completely skipping the checkout line.

Also let me debunk some common myths, self checkouts didn't cost anyone their job, those jobs were moved to online grocery which makes up 40-60% of most stores total sales, with that number going up each year.

Second is that stores would hire more cashiers if they could. The job pool just sucks at that lowest level.

Most store managers would gladly pay an extra 3-4 people to stand around/tidy up the front end/help watch for shrink where some of the highest margin/easily steal able merchandise is, if it meant not having to hear the same complaint 10000 times each day.
