Yeah, I kinda have to agree that without other limitations this just comes off as "if a US company was equally farming our data it'd be ok, because the government could just slip right in." The real issue is that it's going to an adversary and thus a risk.

Something to keep in mind is that, from my understanding at least, this would ban the app if the company operations in the US wasnt sold to a US buyer. So TikTok could still be a thing if someone were willing to buy it up (and the owner wanted to sell it), which seems likely given that its still a powerful social media tool.

But make no mistake, none of this actually gives a shit about our privacy. If Congress cared about that TikTok would be a drop in the bucket compared to the privacy violations businesses make every single day in this country. This is just xenophobia and racism wrapped up to look like privacy protection.

The bill would create a process for the president to deem a social media app under the control of a foreign adversary as a national security threat and then ban it from U.S. app stores within 6 months unless the app severs ties with that country.

RIP any app created by people from foreign countries if the president is Republican.

Technically I think a president has to order it first so if Biden doesn't designate the app as a security threat it won't happen. With Biden actively having a campaign on it right now that's probably unlikely this year. But who knows for the future.

Two things to note as well:
Steve Bannon is critiquing Trump because he's likely paid off to support tik tok falling into US hands entirely even though he was singing a different time before that he wanted it banned entirely. Trump has always been a broke boy that got his wealth from family or billionaires like Sheldon Adelson, so we know it getting banned outright will fuck Trump now & he only wants to save it for his own skin.

Second thing is that Bannon is wrong in thinking that Trump has never been bought out, but if he wants to take a stance against him now for even a fraction of a pico second, this could be spun that Trump wants to utilize that data collection for nefarious reasons(he obviously does); if he changed his mind on banning the app now.

So Democrats if they're actually going to do this, need to ban it outright so it doesn't fall into the hands of people like Trump or Marsha Blackburn or Tuberville, because I'd rather the app be dead entirely with the few positives it has, then be a useful tool to be bought by the likes of them or even Bobby Kotick.
