Now, you might be thinking that six is better because it means that you can have two full combat parties, but I absolutely hate when RPGs split the party so I intentionally picked a number that lets you have a few additional options in combat without giving the game the opportunity to do so.

probably around 9 or 10. Anymore and I don't think the story can flesh out the characters enough unless you're playing an MMO like FF14.

Lower than 6. I feel like 6 is when JRPGs start to lose it in the character development department. Either from them not being developed, being useless to the plot, not getting enough screen time, or sometimes even from a gameplay perspective. Let's say if you can remove a character from the game entirely, and you can't find enough reasons for why the game wouldn't work without their inclusion then the game had too many party members.

Entire party? I don't know maybe a dozen? Suikoden as we knew had 108 characters granted that means only a few get development but eh face/book cover level development isn't the worst.

Let's be real. Anything over 8 is objectively too much and is enough to kill a game. Why do you think Chrono Cross is seen as terrible beyond the mess of a story and why Suikoden as a franchise is dead? The only exception is if it is a monster catching game like Pokemon since those aren't characters.

Players can't handle more than 8 characters, story takes a nosedive, characters take a nosedive, and everything goes downhill.

Whatever the usable amount in combat is plus 3-4. This lets you experiment with multiple party configs in gameplay, along with a decent amount of others characters to enjoy story wise without bloating things.

  2. You actually get to use most of them because of either scripted party segments or party splitting.
There's only a few games that have large 10+ parties that actually meet that criteria.

  • FF6
  • FF4:TAY
  • Trails in the Sky 3rd
  • Trails of Cold Steel series
  • Trails into Reverie

Trails of Cold Steel 4 was the definition of party bloat. Sure many many had fleshed out back stories but omg. I had my core kick ass crew and then a slight experimental crew and that was it.

I brute forced through some sections when a story important character I just plum didn't use much had to be in the party. I played on Hard too so yea lol

Hence my point. You said "everyone is fleshed out" as a requirement yet FFVI clearly does not fit the bill. Similarly, the ability to just drop characters until you end up with 10+ detailed ones jumps up the list dramatically to the point that it makes the list moot (such as every Suikoden game absolutely having 10+ detailed party members despite its trash % of the overall being basically nobodies).

I do know years ago when I posted my game concept on this site I had people say the game will automatically fail due to the large cast. Though my mentality is that as long as you can flesh out them mostly well and have the gameplay features to synergize with the large cast, it should be fine to go for a larger party size.

It ultimately depends on the kind of game you are going for.

This is kinda my point. It works for Suikoden because the game is designed for it. The characters largely have utility beyond battle, making them worth seeking out even if you have a party you like. But you're also encouraged to try them all out in battle even if it's like the cook or whatever, because they level super fast and there are hidden synergies between party members.

But it's way too much for something like Final Fantasy, which would as a result have to be hundreds of hours of glorified side quests because they feel like everyone has to have a development arc and all that jazz.

6-8 and have some mechanic where reserve members can potentially participate in battles too. Stuff like character swapping mid-battle or the assault mechanic from the recent Star Ocean 2 remake.

Technically in SRW Alpha 3 you can control up to 96 units* plus 3 mothership, and plus guest/reinforcement units.
*Actually 24 squads, which comprised of up to 4 units of your choice.

But SRW games returned to single unit settings, last time we got multiple units slot was OG series which let you pair two units without restrictions.
